Goedhuis, April 2003
This is a stunning Las Cases, a thoughtful, serious blockbuster. With yields of merely 27 hl/ha it is no surprise that this wine is so concentrated. Yet it is also exquisitely balanced, pure and exciting. In our view it shows all the qualities of a first growth. As James Suckling wrote, 'LasCases does it again'.

Robert Parker, April 2005, Score: 95
Only 43% of the production made it into the final blend of this remarkable 2002. Produced from a low 17 hectoliters per hectare, it includes 66.7% Cabernet Sauvignon, 14.5% Merlot, 13.9% Cabernet Franc, and the rest Petit Verdot. It has the highest alcohol ever achieved in a Leoville Las Cases (13.5%) as well as a lofty pH of 3.85. Nevertheless, the impression is one of a structured wine with considerable density, a ruby/purple color, layers of flavor, and a classic overall personality. The wine exhibits pure black currant, licorice-infused fruit, huge body, a viscous mid-palate, and a long, heady finish. I suspect this wine won't be nearly as charming as the 2003in its youth, but it hasn't yet closed down, and I am amazed at just how rich, intense, andfull-bodied it tastes even after bottling. This is certainly one of the half dozen or so candidates for wine of the vintage. Anticipated maturity: 2012-2030+.

James Suckling, April 2003, Score: 95-100
Subtle aromas of blackberries, currants and minerals, with hints of violets. Full-bodied, with a massive core of fruit and firm and rich tannins. Very muscular. Las Cases does it again.
Producer
Château Léoville Las Cases
If ever another wine gets promoted to first growth category, Léoville Les Cases will undoubtedly bethe one. Owned by the Delon family, this château is comprised of 97 hectares of vineyards. However, unlike most of its Médoc neighbours, it only uses the vineyards classified in the original 1855 classification, an area called "Le Grand Enclos", to make its grand vin.
Region
St Julien
St Julien is like the middle child of the Médoc - not as assertive as Pauillac or as coquettish as Margaux. It lies firmly between the two more outspoken communes and as a result produces a blend of them both. St Julien's wines have often been sought out by aficionados for their balance and consistency, particularly in the UK. Yet due to its middle child nature, it can occasionally be overlooked globally and as a result underrated by those markets outside the UK. Despite the fact that it has no first growths, it has several second growths including Léoville Las Cases, Léoville Barton, Léoville Poyferré and Ducru Beaucaillou as well as the celebrated châteaux such as Talbot and Beychevelle.
