Goedhuis, April 2003
Once again Ch Latour is probably the most powerful first growth of the vintage. 74% Cabernet Sauvignon, 25% Merlot, 0.5% Cabernet Franc and 0.5% Petit Verdot, it has a discreet nose and a brooding palate that explodes with bramble fruit. With remarkable freshness and density it manages to combine the structure of 1996 with the exuberant fruit of 1989 or 1986.

Robert Parker, April 2005, Score: 96
The wine of the vintage? There are only 10,000 cases of this extraordinarily rich, dense 2002 that is as powerful as the 2003 (even the alcohol levels are nearly the same, 12.85%) . It is dark ruby/purple to the rim, with notes of English walnuts, crushed rocks, black currants, and forest floor, dense, full-bodied, and opulent, yet classic with spectacular aromatics, marvelous purity, and a full-bodied finish that lasts just over 50+ seconds. Huge richness and the sweetness of the tannin are somewhat deceptive as this wine seems set for a long life. Administrator Frederic Engerer seems to be more pleased with what Latour achieved in 2002 than in any other recent vintage. Hats off to him for an extraordinary accomplishment in a vintage that wouldn't have beenexpected to produce the raw materials to achieve something at this level of quality. Anticipated maturity: 2012-2045.

James Suckling, April 2003, Score: 92-94
Extremely aromatic, with crushed berry, currants and lead pencil. Full-bodied, with good tannins and a long-lasting finish. Racy and austere, but very good. Almost 95-100.

Jancis Robinson, April 2003, Score: 18.5
Exceptionally dark purple right out to the rim. Lovely pure, serious expression of both Cabernet Sauvignon (74 per cent of the blend) and the vintage (which yielded only one per cent in total of Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot in this wine and none in Latour's other two wines). As with Les Forts, purity is the dominant feature of this wine. There's no hint of specious sweetness, toastiness, overripeness or over-extraction - common clues to the tricks sometimes used elsewhere - nor indeed of the underripeness that dogs some wines. Full, lively, great youth but great vivacity too. Dry, clean, sumptuous. More suave perhaps than Les Forts, but Les Forts (qv) is awfully good. Drink 2012-30

It can be considered the King of the First Growths, having the extraordinary power, structure and presence.Read less

Region
Pauillac
Due south of St Estèphe lies the appellation of Pauillac, the king of Left Bank communes. It is home to three first growths as well as a plethora of other classified growths. Pauillac's renowned well-draining, gravelly soils enable its dominant grape Cabernet Sauvignon to reach fantastic heights of complexity and concentration. As a result, Pauilac's wines tend to be full-bodied with compact tannins and good freshness. Its aromatics are often what one associates with classic Bordeaux: pencil shavings, black currant and occasional mint. Some of the most famous châteaux of the commune are Latour, Mouton Rothschild, Lafite Rothschild, Pichon Baron, Pichon Lalande and Lynch Bages.
