Showing some lightening at the edges as well as some amber, this is the least impressive of the greatest vintages for Cos d'Estournel between 2000 and 2009. It is an outstanding wine, but it iscloser to maturity and lacking the concentration, texture, and overall compelling aromatics of more recent vintages. The wine displays roasted herbs intermixed with licorice, incense, black cherry, and black currant fruit. Medium-bodied, rather than full, elegant, with some spicy tannins and a nice sweet finish, compared to the other top classified growths, this wine is on a much faster evolutionary track and can be drunk now and over the next 15 or more years.

This wine puts on weight and grows in stature every time I go back to it. In fact, from the bottle it was better than ever. A blend of 60% Cabernet Sauvignon, 38% Merlot, and 2% Cabernet Franc, the 2000 Cos d'Estournel suffers only in comparison with its successor, the 2001. Deep bluish purple in color with a reticent but emerging bouquet of cedar, licorice, blueberry, cassis, vanilla, and lead pencil shavings, this medium-bodied, slightly sinewy Cos d'Estournel has relatively high tannin, an excellent mid-palate, and a persistent finish. Purity and classicism are hallmarks of this top-flight wine. Anticipated maturity: 2010-2022.

Wonderfully deep, glossy purple. Supple, silky smooth on the nose. Long and rich with very attractive balance. Tannins noticeably ripe and fresh. Lovely effortlessly velvety texture quite different from some of the more forced efforts in recent vintages.

60% Cabernet Sauvignon, 40% Merlot. 75% new wood. 66% into the grand vin. 48 hl/ha.In the last few vintages Cos d'Estournel has been getting more and more exotic. This is areturn to something more classic. But it is a long way from super second quality. Verygood colour. Ripe nose. Medium to medium-full body. Rather loose-knit in structure.Where is the energy and the concentration? It is quite sophisticated but it is a waste ofan opportunity to have made something as fluid as this. Merely good. From 2006.I have ever tasted. Fullish body, but very splendidly rich, concentrated, verystylish fruit. Excellent tannin. Fine grip. This is very classy indeed. Just as good asPontet-Canet. Very lovely long, lush finish. From 2010.

Since 2000, Cos d’Estournel has been in the hands of French hotelier Michel Reybier. Under Reybier’s direction, the château has thrived. In 2007 he commissioned a state-of-the-art wine cellar, the first in Bordeaux to use solely gravity (no pumps). The 91-hectare vineyard is planted to a majority Cabernet Sauvignon with Merlot (33%), Cabernet Franc (1%) and Petit Verdot (1%) and produces the Grand Vin Cos d’Estournel and a second wine, Pagodes de Cos.Read less

Region
Haut-Médoc
The Haut-Médoc is an appellation within the Médoc that stretches along the left bank of the Gironde from Blanquefort in the south to the north of Bordeaux. The region encompasses the more famous communes of St-Estèphe, Pauillac, St-Julien and Margaux. Following the 1855 classification many of its most famous estates were classified and scored as first, second, third, fourth or fifth growths. This was based on their social and commercial positions at the time. Most of these classed growths use the village appellation name, such as Pauillac. However five of these classed growths fell outside a village appellation so take the name Haut-Médoc. Many of the vineyards which are classified as Haut-Médoc may actually also be referred to as Cru Bourgeois wines. These wines have lower permitted yields and so offer great value for money.
