This is just now beginning to display hints of secondary development though the essential thrust of the nose remains ripe aromas of red and black pinot fruit that is nuanced with hints of violets and anise plus a fascinating array of spices. This remains mildly austere on the palate though much less so than it was in its true youth with plenty of soil and mineral-inflected nuances to the impressively dense and powerful yet classy flavors that deliver simply huge length. As classic Musigny always is, this delivers an incredible combination of power, minerality and grace. For my taste this has arrived at the front edge of its peak drinkability though it should hold here for years to come. Multiple and mostly consistent notes though a few bottles have displayed some leafiness on the finish and one recent bottle displayed a touch of brett. Drink Now+. 94/100

(With thanks to Dr. Reed Day). As classic Musigny always is, this delivers an incredible combination of power and grace. While this can certainly be approached now with pleasure, for my taste I would still be inclined to cellar this for another 5 to 8 years first. Multiple notes. Drink: 2016+.

Massive aromas of red and black fruits and a fascinating array of spices and violets with austere yet regal soil inflected flavors of incredible density. This is arguably 100% pure extract of pinot yet the textural impact does not come across as syrupy or viscous. There is superb balance to go with the serious nature of this wine and it simply reeks class. Wine simply doesn't get much better. It is Musigny such as this that forcefully puts forth the question as to whether this isn't the greatest dirt in all of Burgundy (there are of course rebuttals to the question but not many). Drink: 2015-2030.

Producer

Domaine Comte Georges de Vogüé

This domaine can trace its history back over 500 years. It has been in the hands of the same family which is now in its 20th generation.George's grand-daughters Clare de Causans and Marie de Ladoucette are the family members presently involved.Currently the wine is overseen by Francois Millet as winemaker and Eric Bourgogne as chef de vignes. The vineyards spread to 12.5 hectares. They, amazingly, adapt their techniques depending on the conditions of the particular vintage, and rather disparage those who have a single "best" technique every year. This, hopefully, allows a purer expression of the raw material and vintage.

Region

Le Musigny

Le Musigny is a red Grand Cru vineyard based in Burgundy’s Chambolle Musigny village in the Côte de Nuits. Le Musigny is situated between the scrubland at the top of the slope and the upper section of Clos de Vougeot on well-draining limestone soil. The wines of Le Musigny are some of the best in Burgundy on a par with those of Romanée Conti, La Tâche, Richebourg, Chambertin and Chambertin Clos de Bèze.
