Tasting Notes

Robert Parker, February 2001,
Score: 92Wine Advocate #133 (Feb 2001) Robert Parker 92 points Drink 2009 and afterThis is a powerful, rich wine, aged in 50% new oak and 50% one-year old barrels. It is bottled with neither fining nor filtration. The 1998 Hermitage Marquise de la Tourette exhibits a remarkably huge, chewy mid-palate as well as formidable persistence, but it is very tannic and backward. Readers who are not willing to invest 8-10 years of cellaring should forget about this wine. Some toasty new oak is present, but the primary characteristic is the layers of black fruits intertwined with minerals.

Region
Hermitage
Hermitage is a region that produces both red and white wines. Its famous red is made from 100% Syrah while the white is produced from Marsanne and/or Roussanne. A sweeter and very rare white wine is also produced from grapes that have been dried on straw before being pressed. A slighter warmer micro-climate enables Hermitage's red wines to have more ripeness and structure than Côte Rôtie which adds additional power and longevity. As a result, they are usually the most ‘masculine' styled reds in all of the northern Rhône.
