Robert Parker, April 1999,
A blend of primarily Cabernet Sauvignon with some Merlot, this wine comes across as tannic. Its deep purple color, medium body, and sweet cassis-scented nose with foresty smells are impressive. This ferociously tannic effort will require 7-10 years of cellaring. Let's hope it does not dry out. Anticipated maturity: 2008-2017.
Robert Parker, April 2000,
This wine reveals some of the vintage's high tannin (particularly noticeable in the Cabernet-based Medocs), but admirable density, more sweetness and ripeness than last year, and a long, excellent finish, with abundant black currant fruit intermixed with new wood, earth, and spice box flavors. Anticipated maturity: 2006-2020.
Robert Parker, April 2001,
This dense ruby/purple-colored blend of 67% Cabernet Sauvignon and 33% Merlot has filled out nicely during its upbringing in wood. It exhibits a fruitcake, cedar, spice box, plum, black raspberry, and currant-scented bouquet, excellent richness, moderate levels of sweet tannin, fine purity, and a complex style. Anticipated maturity: 2005-2020. Produced by the Rothschild's brilliant administrator, Charles Chevalier, Duhart Milon is a wine to watch.Drink 2005-2020
Owned since 1962 by the Rothschilds of Château Lafite, this wine is often overlooked. Yet it usually comes through with impressive results, its style replicating its more renowned big brother with outstanding purity and finesse.
Due south of St Estèphe lies the appellation of Pauillac, the king of Left Bank communes. It is home to three first growths as well as a plethora of other classified growths. Pauillac's renowned well-draining, gravelly soils enable its dominant grape Cabernet Sauvignon to reach fantastic heights of complexity and concentration. As a result, Pauilac's wines tend to be full-bodied with compact tannins and good freshness. Its aromatics are often what one associates with classic Bordeaux: pencil shavings, black currant and occasional mint. Some of the most famous châteaux of the commune are Latour, Mouton Rothschild, Lafite Rothschild, Pichon Baron, Pichon Lalande and Lynch Bages.
