Goedhuis, March 2016, Score: 16.5
Possibly not in the class of more recent vintages, this represents a style before the construction of the new winery. Advanced mature brick red colour, showing signs of browning on the edges. A little herbal and medicinal, with hints mushrooms ad ceps on the nose. In the palate it has advanced tertiary flavours and has a slight lack of depth, texture and the normal level of complexity that one expects from the best VCC’s. Slightly disappointing and needs drinking up.

Neal Martin, January 2016, Score: 92
The 1990 Vieux Château Certan is drinking exceptionally well at the moment, although it does not quite possess the charm of the 1989. There is more primary fruit here than the previous vintage: black cherries, iodine and boysenberry, mingling with clove and tarry aromas that emerge with time. The palate is medium-bodied with supple tannin. There is similar depth here to the 1989 and yet the finish does not quite deliver the same delineation, although that cheeky dab of kirsch is pure delight. This is a great VCC, although I did notice that over a period of an hour, it fails to keep pace with the ever-meliorating 1989. Tasted January 2016.

Robert Parker, 1998, Score: 91
The 1990, which I previously rated several points higher, is backward and tannic, but promising. I was surprised by the severe level of harsh tannin in the wine, but I believe it is balanced out by sweet, jammy, coconut-scented, spicy, earthy, black currant and cherry fruit. The wine is full-bodied and muscular, with a tannin level that is far more pronounced than in previous tastings. Anticipated maturity: 2003-2020.
Producer
Vieux Château Certan
What is there not to like about this château and its amiable owner, Alexandre Thienpont? Sensitive, reflective and wonderfully humble, he is of the school who believes that wine makes itself. He is just the assistant who helps it along the way. And the wine certainly seems to be spectacular year after year.
Region
Pomerol
The small sub-region of Pomerol is situated north-east of the industrious city of Libourne. Pomerol's soils are predominately iron-rich clay with a smattering of gravel that produce wines with extraordinary power and depth. As a result of this clay-dominance, it has the highest percentage of Merlot planted in all of Bordeaux. Certain châteaux are produced exclusively from this grape, but most incorporate smaller quantities of Cabernet Sauvignon and Cabernet Franc as well. Despite its hefty (if not exclusive) proportion of Merlot, many people think of wines from this region as separate entities. As one wine aficionado stated recently, "It's not Merlot. It's Pomerol." Despite the region's small size, Pomerol contains some of the world's most sought after (and expensive) wines including Pétrus, Le Pin, Lafleur, l'Evangile and Vieux Château Certan. Unlike other Bordelais subregions, there is no system of classification. The châteaux are traded on reputation alone.
