Though the region began producing wines in 372 A.D., the world would have to wait a while before Domaine Huet was established. It was in 1928 that Victor Huet and his son, Gaston, planted their first vines. But it was not until after World War II in 1947 when Gaston took over and the domaine really began to shine. Gaston increased vineyard land and was a meticulous grape grower and winemaker. All this attention to detail firmly placed Domaine Huet on the oenological map. In 1976, the ever charming and dynamic Noël Pinguet, Gastons son-in-law, took over the running of the domaine. Noël pushed the boundaries even further lowering yields and introducing biodynamic viticulture in 1990, one of the first domaines in the world at that time. His passion and incredible skill has earned him the title of "Master of Chenin" by various critics including Neal Martin of Erobertparker.com. Today, they boast 35 hectares of vines that are dispersed amongst three vineyards - Le Haut Lieu, Le Clos du Bourg, and Le Mont. Le Haut Lieu tends to produce wines that are fragrant and open when young. Le Clos du Bourg is famed for its sweet wines but can also produce curvaceous dry and off-styles. Le Mont is the king of ŒCalcaire as its wines are powerful, mineral and have laser-like focus; they usually require several years to open up. They can produce various styles of wine from dry to sweet (even sparkling!) and depending on the vintage, not all three vineyards will produce all styles of wine. Rather, they will let nature decide how its terroir is expressed - a bit like top German vineyard sites. This is an exceptional domaine worth exploring.Read less

Region

Vouvray

Perched on the banks of the Loire just to the east of Tours, the Vouvray vineyards swathe the hills rising behind the roofs of the picturesque village. Houses and cellars are carved into the chalk hillsides, creating chilly caverns ideal for the storage of wine. Fine white wines made from Chenin Blanc range from bone dry and sparkling to unctuously sweet depending on the vicissitudes of the vintage. Not necessarily at the forefront of current fashion these wines are classically delicious and not to be missed.
