A terrific pair of
textbook St Juliens

New Releases | Ch Langoa Barton & Branaire Ducru 2018

A superb pair of St Julien's have released this morning: Châteaux Langoa Barton and Branaire Ducru at £435 and £462 respectively. This was one of our favourite communes in 2018.

Ch Langoa Barton 3ème Cru St Julien 2018

We had the good fortune to taste the wine a number of times during the Union des Grands Crus tastings and it is clear that in 2018 Langoa Barton have produced a wonderful grand vin.

The wine is perfectly poised with juicy black fruit on the palate matched to fine, firm tannins and the finish is fresh, long and hugely appealing. In short it is a delicious claret. It received a score of 93-95 from David Roberts MW, while the Wine Spectator commented, "A textbook 2018 and a textbook St.-Julien" with a score of 93-96.

Ch Branaire Ducru 4ème Cru St Julien 2018

Located in southern St Julien, Branaire Ducru is just across the road from Château Beychevelle. The château is skilfully managed by the late Patrick Maroteaux's son, François-Xavier, who worked with his father for a number of years and now manages the property full-time.

One of the stars at the St Julien UGC, David Roberts MW stated, “This superb wine has the potential to be Branaire’s finest wine to date in the 21st century. It really has everything.” and awarded it a massive 94-96. The critics shared his enthusiasm with a spread of high scores and glowing praise.

When we tasted it in Bordeaux, the concentration and power impressed us, alongside the complexity of flavours. With more time in barrel, it’s sure to become a beautifully balanced wine. Patrick Maroteaux's legacy lives on!

Both these wines show off the best of the 2018 vintage and merit inclusion in any cellar.

      Goedhuis, April 2019, Score: 94-96

This superb wine has the potential to be Branaire’s finest wine to date in the 21st century. It really has everything. A blend of 58% Cabernet Sauvignon, 33% Merlot, 5% Petit Verdot and 4% Cabernet Franc. Deep dense opaque colour, full of dark black fruits, with hints of mocha and spice. A wonderfully energetic style, bright and lively, and deliciously sweet. The layer of ripe structured tannins provides additional texture to what is a wonderfully complete wine. Delicious.

          Goedhuis, April 2019, Score: 93-95

This delightfully elegant property festooned in flowering wisteria during the primeur week has been home to Anthony Barton since he inherited the estate from his Uncle Ronald Barton. A beautifully classic example of St Julien, shining purple in colour, full of dark fruits with a hint of black olive. I loved the central core of fruit in the palate, with a kernel of tight intense tannins providing an additional dimension to the wine. This has drive and energy with a finish of delicious sweet black fruit. Lovely.
