Goedhuis Recommends: June 2020
Warm, sunny days call for long lunches at home with a glass of something delicious, or a line drawn under your workday with a chilled glass of white or rosé. We welcome June with the arrival of some new vintages of our most beloved drinking wines, wines we adore for their terrific quality and value.
The 2019 vintage is making its first appearance in Italy and the Loire. We’re seriously impressed with the sprightly, citrussy 2019 Vernaccia from our organically certified friends at Tenuta Le Calcinaie, while the 2019 Petit F from Michel Redde is a perfectly balanced and evocatively summery Pouilly Fumé. In Burgundy, the 2018 whites from the Mâconnais are fragrant, juicy and ready to enjoy: Marcel Couturier’s Macon-Loché and Domaine de la Croix Senaillet’s Saint Véran are two great examples at under £15 a bottle.
The Clos Mireille Domaines Ott is the epitome of chic Provencal rosé and many of you will be delighted to hear that the supremely drinkable 2019 vintage is in stock. Needless to say, this fresh, bright and thirst-quenching rosé is perfect for summer and comes in some very fun large formats.
Bright and fruity reds come in the form of the 2018 Fleurie Clos de la Roilette, a superstar Beaujolais that is structured yet easy-going, and the 2018 Bourgogne Derrière Sazenay Domaine Charton, a delightful new cuvée for us from a grower we have worked with for many years. You could consider serving either of these just below room temperature on a warm summer’s day to bring out the crisp red fruits. Tuscan producer Sesti is yet another estate we’re proud to have a longstanding relationship with. Their 2017 Monteleccio is fleshy and immediately appealing, so do try a case from this excellent, albeit very small, vintage. Our final offering is from newly discovered producer Château des Antonins. This succulent and plummy Bordeaux Supérieur from the stellar 2016 vintage is equal proportions Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon and a delightful £10.92 a bottle. It’s the perfect claret to gear you up for the forthcoming Bordeaux En Primeur campaign.
Lastly, as we inch towards a relaxation of lockdown regulations, it is just possible that we will all have something to celebrate in the foreseeable future, so don’t get caught out with no Champagne in the house! Our house bubbly, the Paul Goerg Brut Réserve, is unbeatable on quality and price. Creamy and biscuity with bright citrus fruits, popping a cork will be an occasion in itself.
We hope that you’ll enjoy these new arrivals as much as we do.
