Goedhuis Recommends: January 2019

There are three camps into which wine drinkers seem to fall into immediately after the New Year. There are those people who decide to avoid drinking alcohol entirely having succumbed to the onslaught of festive celebrations, those who defer their abstemious period to the only slightly shorter month of February and those who continue to live as normal. It is these people, to whom I reach out now.

We sold a fair chunk of Champagne last year in January, so obviously there are many people who abhor the idea that the merry festive cheer will end! This month I am recommending our house Blanc de Blanc Champagne, a truly glorious cuvée made from 100% Chardonnay. Everyone who tastes this well priced Champagne adores it - so light on its feet with wonderful lemony freshness and a satisfying creamy texture.

The two white wines chosen to cut through any mild festive hangover are the new vintage of Vernaccia di San Gimignano 2017, which is wonderfully aromatic, crisp and energetic on the palate and Bruno Colin’s pure and inviting Bourgogne Chardonnay 2016 that is drinking brilliantly now. Highly recommended.

Lovers of good red Burgundy will adore this Premier Cru from Tollot Beaut, arguably the greatest domaine in Savigny Les Beaune. This Premier Cru Aloxe Corton is from the Les Valozieres vineyard, located directly below the Grand Cru Vineyard of Corton Bressandes. The wine is broad on the palate, full bodied with wonderfully complex wild berry aromas. This is just starting to drink really well now and will benefit from an hour or so in a decanter.

Or perhaps enjoy a new and exciting addition to our list from the Imperial winery, in Rioja. The 2010 Gran Reserva is one of the most delicious and inviting wines I have had the pleasure of drinking this year. 2010 is a knock out vintage in Rioja. The wine is full bodied, with soft textured silky tannins, an intense core of dark spicy fruits and a perfectly integrated seam of vanilla oak. Just a brilliant wine. If you are susceptible to the January blues, this beauty will put a smile on your face!
