Goedhuis recommends: February 2020
The early mornings are finally getting lighter and thankfully everyone seems to be looking a great deal more perky on my commuter train at the crack of dawn. The month of February brings dinner parties, people falling off the wagon in their droves and a flurry of wine orders, as refilling the depleted cellar becomes of paramount importance.
I have chosen two delicious white wines to excite the senses this month. Our 2018 Sancerre Domaine Bernard Reverdy comes from vines located around the little village of Verdigny. This is a fabulous example of a very taut and racy Sauvignon Blanc that is fresh and crisp on the palate. I served this wonderful wine in December to a group of friends at a dinner and received unanimous high praise. A genuinely exciting Sancerre and highly recommended.
If a Chablis is in order to ease you back into the swing of things, Isabelle and Denis Pommier make a delicious Chablis village and with four years bottle age, the 2016 is now fully mature. Their domaine was founded in 1990 and they have recently been following biodynamic principles both in the winery and in the vineyard. Their 2016 is still incredibly fresh, with a juicy core of yellow stone fruit. A bottle is just shy of £20 on the table and an absolute bargain.
In February last year, we sold a large quantity of magnums of red wine and I urge you to consider the 2014 Château Beaumont Haut Medoc (also available in 75cl) and the 2010 Viña Real Reserva, both available in magnum format. Château Beaumont is normally a blend of around 50/50 Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot, with a little Petit Verdot (the seasoning within the blend). With 6 years of bottle age, this brilliant everyday claret is showing extremely well today. The perfect dinner party wine at a sensible price of £33 per magnum.
2010 is a top year in Rioja, one of the greatest modern-day vintages. This superb Rioja Reserva is packed with dark red fruits and has an interesting savoury character on the mid-palate. Medium bodied, with fine tannins and excellent freshness on the finish, it is a wine that will give huge pleasure to all Rioja lovers. Please note that it needs to be decanted for an hour or so to really show off its wonderful aromatics in the glass.
