Fürst Pinot Noir
German Spätburgunders are carving out an enviable niche in the Pinot Noir landscape. They are winning top international prizes and are frequently found on the best restaurant lists around the world, offering exceptional quality at prices that remain tethered to reality. Germany now grows more Pinot Noir than New Zealand and Australia put together, and its history in regions like Franken reaches far back into monastic history.
Germany's cool climate combined with a new generation of engaged, young, inquisitive winemakers mean the country is producing some of the finest Pinot Noirs in the world, with the Grands Crus - the Grosses Gewächs - rivalling Burgundy for finesse, elegance, mystery and beauty. But these wines shouldn't be bought as a novel alternative to or replacement for Burgundy; they are unique and exceptional wines in their own right and well worth making space for in your cellar.
2015 was a superb growing season across Germany, and we have waited with great anticipation for the release of the Grosses Gewächs this autumn. The Fürst estate, established in 1638, has enjoyed consistent veneration for the superb quality of their ethereal, delicate, and astonishingly precise Pinot Noirs, with 2015 marking a high point in their canon. With a little patience, rest assured this will blossom into one of the finest Pinots in your cellar.
We are also offering their Pinot Noir Tradition 2016, which at £18.60 per bottle offers excellent value. It has the classical characters of the high German style, in a juicier, lighter frame perfect for earlier drinking.
Both are ready for delivery in time for Christmas. Free UK delivery on orders over £300, otherwise £18.
Fürst are a leading name in the world of German Pinot Noir, and in a vintage like the magnificent 2015 their mastery is on full display. This Grosses Gewächs (equivalent to ‘grand cru’) is hypnotically good. It is such a complex wine – smoky, mineral, spicy – with a delicate touch. It’s sweet red berry fruit core with scented dried herbs flickers across the palate as if almost weightless. Fine, powdery tannins offer discreet support to the fruit. Graceful and gorgeous.
The ruby colored 2015 Centgrafenberg Spätburgunder GG opens with a deep, pure, spicy and fresh bouquet of ripe cherries and red berries along with crushed stone aromas. Full-bodied, intense and powerful on the palate, this is a concentrated, ripe and full-bodied Pinot Noir with great tension, freshness, finesse and elegance. Thanks to a prominent part of whole clusters (55%), this is tightly structured by firm tannins. Very stimulating. Drink 2018 - 2032
Lightly smoky nose. Sweet start and lots of interest. Strawberries and gherkins – surprisingly nice mix! Fresh, unforced finish. Long – peacock's tail finish. Light and fresh. Drink 2017-2025
Pale ruby, with a cool red fruit aroma of currants and strawberries. A deliciously juicy palate with some crunchy tannins keeps the wine fresh and bright, and hugely enjoyable. This is a great introduction to the high class calibre of German Pinot Noirs.
