New Release | Contino Viña del Olivo 2015
Rioja Viña del Olivo is Contino's flagship wine and widely regarded as one of the greatest wines in Spain. Tasted and absolutely loved by the Goedhuis team last week, we are pleased to offer the outstanding new 2015 release.
This wine has just been given knockout praise. Tim Atkin enthuses, “Contino’s best wine is the kind of red that any serious Rioja lover should have in their cellar” and awards it 98 points. At £240 per six bottles we could not agree more.
The pedigree the wine carries sets it apart from other Riojas. It is essentially a single vineyard; a purebred ‘first growth’ Rioja. Given prices of recent new releases for great vintages from Burgundy and Bordeaux, this looks a very compelling buy.
What makes the Viña del Olivo plot so special is the shelter provided by the “Cerro de la Mesa”. The unique microclimate produces wines of inimitable quality, capable of ageing for decades. A true single vineyard wine from estate grown grapes which is a world away from the mass-produced Rioja wines which have unfortunately muddied the definition of what Rioja is.
Everything from the manual harvest of the grapes to the tiny production of under 900 cases attest to the quality derived from this special plot, leading Tim Atkin to call this vintage of Viña del Olivo “world-class”.

Simply stunning in 2015, as it was in 2014, Contino’s best wine is the kind of red that any serious Rioja lover should have in his cellar. Marrying Tempranillo with 10% Graciano, it’s a world-class cuvée made for the long haul, with aromas of incense and Mediterranean herbs, fine, nuanced tannins, chalky acidity and incredible focus, balance and palate-length.
98 points Tim Atkin
This is energetic with blackberry, stone and dried lemon rind. Full and tightly structured. Minerality and freshness is superb. Black olive turns to black pepper. Lively finish.
95 points James Suckling
It’s a modern, ripe and generously oaked Rioja built for the future. This is a structured and slightly international, “expensively made” wine that gains with time in bottle as it absorbs the effect of the élevage and shows the character of the great vineyards from where it’s sourced. Made in the style of the end of the 1990’s, it’s for fans of that style and for the future.
