2016 Pommard 1er Cru Clos des Epeneaux Comte Armand | 93-95 points
One of the great terroirs of the Cote de Beaune, Clos des Epeneaux is the jewel in Comte Armand’s crown and Pommard’s most celebrated climat. Perennially one of our most sought after wines at En Primeur, under the deft and sure stewardship of régisseur Paul Zinetti recent vintages have expressed the full potential of this magnificent vineyard.
The 2016 vintage was not without its challenges, a devastating frost on the night of 26th April laid waste to much of the domaine’s vines with losses of 70% in the Clos des Epeneaux monopole itself. However, the quality of the subsequent fruit was superb. As Paul commented: "2016 was a mix of good and bad news. The bad is that several of our vineyards were crushed by the frost…The good news is that the quality of the fruit that the frost and the subsequent attack of mildew didn't destroy was excellent…the wines are wonderfully refreshing and should drink well young but they're sufficiently well-constructed to age extremely well."
This is a wine on which the critics shower praise. Neal Martin awarded 93-95 points and stated “I found immense promise within the component parts of the Clos des Epéneaux.” Allen Meadows commented, “I agree with Zinetti that the quality of the Armand 2016s is first-rate and the only pity is that there is so little of them”.
Despite only 29 barrels being produced, we are fortunate to have secured and delighted to offer a parcel of the 2016 vintage.
