Eden Rift Vineyards | A New Goedhuis Exclusive

We are very excited to introduce Eden Rift, out of the Cienega Valley AVA in California, the perfect new addition to our portfolio.

Under vine since 1849, Eden Rift is one of the oldest continually producing estate vineyards in California. A remote, pacific refuge located under the shadow of the Gavilan Mountain Range, the estate rests on the San Andreas Fault. Only 20 miles from the Pacific Ocean, this site benefits from an ideal, temperate maritime climate as well as the coveted calcareous soils requisite in the cultivation of vivid and energetic Chardonnay and Pinot Noir.

Eden Rift's winemaker Cory Waller, spent time in Napa, Oregon and in Martinborough, New Zealand, and neighbouring Calera, before joining the team at Eden Rift. A man of few words, Waller favours the fruit of vines that struggle profoundly to produce small, yet delineated yields. He prefers to allow Mother Nature to do her thing.

Owner Christian Pillsbury is a true oenophile and an ardent lover of early California history. To him, authenticity comes from the history of a place. "We are completely devoted to old style American winemaking that is less intervention, lower alcohol, higher acid, better ageing and not looking at doing something that is widely big and powerful."

We are very excited to be working with Pillsbury and his team, and are delighted to offer the new 2016 releases.

• Eden Rift Chardonnay 2016: The last time I saw Chardonnay this beautifully colored was when I tasted Ceritas wines for the first time. R. H. Drexel,The Wine Advocate

• Eden Rift Pinot Noir 2016: There's a reason Pinot was planted here 80 years ago; it truly is a hidden gem that I hope we can open up to the wine world. Cory Waller

5 Reasons to put a few cases in the cellar

  • One of California's longest standing estate owned vineyards.
  • The gorgeous acidity in both wines will let them age beautifully, and make them approachable now as well.
  • Tipped as one of the hottest upcoming wineries in North America with a very limited production. Only 3000 cases made!
  • Neighbouring vineyard Calera was just purchased by Napa bigwig Duckhorn
  • These releases are excellent value for money compared to the Sonoma Coast heavy weights. £22 and £23.75 per bottle IB for the Chardonnay and Pinot Noir respectively.

Eden Rift Estate Chardonnay Cienega Valley 2016

HK$350 per bottle

A tribute and testament to the estate Chardonnay vines. Barrel fermented and aged in 100% French oak barrels, 20% new. Full malolactic fermentation with weekly batonnage (lees stirring).

The resulting 2016 Estate Chardonnay wine shows great focus, epitomizing nature of the Eden Rift Estate. The calcareous, mountain soil. The wind off the Pacific. The tension of the faultline. It is bright and focused, with notes of gala apple, lemon peel, salted-nectarine, white flowers and minerals. On the palate, it shows creamy textures with racy verve and a lengthy finish. Cory Waller

On the nose, Waller's 2016 Chardonnay is an arresting saline beauty with clearly delineated notes of Thai basil, umami and white peaches. On the palate, it is vibrant with a bracing acidity and a long, clean finish. R. H. Drexel, The Wine Advocate

Eden Rift Estate Pinot Noir Cienega Valley 2016
HK$380 per bottle

Our flagship - a composition of clones and block-specific conditions. Vinification included 60% whole cluster fermentation on native yeast. Aged 11 months in French oak (25% new).

The Estate Pinot Noir does a tense balancing act between red-tones and darker, fleshier fruits. One can pick out aromas such as pomegranate, blackberry, cherry pit, rose hip and black teas, as well as baking spices and chalk-like, mineral notes. At its core, it is focused with great verve and ageability. It shows medium weight with an elegant tannin structure. Cory Waller

I am blown away by the texture and savory aspects of his (Cory Waller's) Pinots, off-set as they are by a fresh, lively fruit presence, one that is never cloying. R.H. Drexel, The Wine Advocate
