The 2015 Saint Romain Cuvée de la Mésange, which Laurent Ponsot told me was picked towards the end of September, has a perfumed acacia honey and brioche-scented bouquet that is quite attractive. The palate is fresh on the entry with an attractive waxy texture, nectarine and peach skin notes tinged with fresh ginger towards the finish. Drink over the next 4-5 years. Drink 2017-2021
Domaine Ponsot is an atypical but outstanding domaine in Morey St Denis. Their combination of late picking, destemming, and ageing in old oak barrels achieve the domaine’s distinctive style of long lived wines. Laurent Ponsot left the domaine in 2017, and the estate is now run by his sister, Rose Marie Ponsot. Alexandre Abel has joined the team as régisseur, and together they continue to uphold these three principles of the estate. Furthermore, they are not afraid to experiment, and are always evolving the viticulture and winemaking style with small innovations.
St Romain is a small red and white wine village in Burgundy’s Côte de Beaune. The St Romains vineyards are situated next to Auxey Duresses higher up the valley on varied soils. In warmer years, this higher altitude creates wines of excellent value.
