(from 3 different parcels, two on the Chassagne side and the third in the Puligny sector that is near the border dividing the two communes). This is also surprisingly expressive at this early stage with a broad-ranging nose that features notes of apple, pear, white flowers, wood spice and a hint of something mildly exotic. The big-bodied yet refined flavors possess a wonderfully textured mouth feel thanks primarily to the abundance of palate coating dry extract that does a beautiful job of buffering the notably firm but not aggressive acid backbone on the hugely long finish where a hint of wood appears. This is slightly finer than usual with a really lovely sense of overall balance and harmony. Drink 2026+
The 2014 Bâtard Montrachet Grand Cru has a more powerful bouquet than the Bienvenue-Bâtard-Montrachet, very energetic with fresh pear, white peach and citrus fruit. The palate is nicely balanced but does not quite offer the detail and precision of the Bienvenue at the moment. It's a grand cru that will hopefully up its game by the time of bottling, because on this showing, it is surpassed by the 2014 Bienvenue. Drink 2018-2030
Broad and rich on the nose with some intriguingly mineral note – putty? – and great generosity even if not the most concentrated. Lots of pleasure. Lots of freshness as well as the richness. Long. Drink 2020-2030
Dark, rich, full aroma; deep and more surly. Very succulent and deep on the strike. A full, broad and dense wine; this has muscle and volume and power. It is has such rich layering in the palate and a long and ‘strong’ finish. Drink from 2024
"One of the greatest white wine domaines in Burgundy" remarked Clive Coates. Doamine Leflaive's vineyards in Puligny Montrachet are steeped in history and the current generation can look back to 1717 for the first Leflaive family occupation of the farm buildings that they use today. The domaine was founded by Joseph Leflaive, who came to Burgundy in 1905. Anne-Claude Leflaive, the granddaughter of Joseph was appointed to run the domaine in 1990. A fervent proponent of biodynamic viticulture, Anne-Claude converted the domaine to biodynamics. After her untimely death in 2015, Brice de La Morandiere's, Anne-Claude's nephew and great grand son of Joseph Leflaive took on the mantle. He upholds the terroir-orientated, sustainable winemaking philosophy of the family.
Bâtard-Montrachet is a great white Grand Cru in Burgundy's Côte D'or. Its vineyards are located onthe slope beneath Le Montrachet, in the Côte de Beaune. Bâtard-Montrachet's soils are heavier than those surrounding it, made up of brown limestone and gravel, which pave the way for rich, nutty, honeyed and heady wines with good structure. They are not as elegant as those from Chevalier-Montrachet and are broader and weightier than wines from Montrachet.
