The south easterly slopes of Frionnes help to produce a richly creamy style of St Aubin. This is a lovely wine for earlier drinking with a delicious mouth coating finish.
Very mild reduction is still enough to push the underlying fruit to the background. There is excellent tension and plenty of minerality to the textured and intense medium-bodied flavors that culminate in a clean and notably dry but not particularly austere finish. While this should certainly reward 5 to 7 years of cellaring it is sufficiently open on the mid-palate to be enjoyed young if desired. Good stuff. Drink 2018+
The 2012 St. Aubin 1er Cru Les Frionnes comes from Olivier’s 2.36-hectare plot of vines planted as far back as 1935. It has a much more lifted, animated bouquet compared to the En Remilly at this stage, with perfumed lime leaf and citrus scents that bode well post-bottling. The palate is very well-balanced with a fine line of acidity. Bestowed with admirable weight and harmony plus a fine linear finish, this would be just one of my picks from Monsieur Lamy this year.
Delicate aroma of white blossom with a more serious stony edge behind that. Saline freshness and tension. Seems softer than the Princée. Drink 2014-2017
The Lamy family has worked the vines in St.Aubin since 1640. Today the domaine is run by Olivier Lamy who recently took over from his father. The domaine produces around 8,500 cases of red and white wine from their 16.5 hectares; the vines are spread around the Côte de Beaune villages of Saint-Aubin, Chassagne-Montrachet, Puligny-Montrachet and Santenay. Since 1997 all production has been domaine-bottled; the output is high quality - their Saint-Aubins in particular are often superior to wines from more fashionable villages.
Due west of Puligny and Chassagne lies the little, picturesque village of St. Aubin. With the neighbouring village of Gamay, it produces 2/3 white wine and 1/3 red wine over 230 hectares of vines of which over 3/4 are premier cru. It was one of the last appellations created in only 1970 but has since created an excellent reputation for good value well made Burgundy that can replicatePuligny. Some of the most expressive vineyards are En Remilly and Les Murgers des Dents de Chien.
