Here the nose is notably tighter and more reserved with aromas of citrus blossom and zest, spice, smoke, fennel and hints of acacia that introduce big, muscular and wonderfully complex broad-scaled flavors that culminate in a long, focused and explosive finish of breathtaking length and intensity. This should reward at least a decade in the cellar and drink well for a similar period thereafter. This too is terrific and very Bâtard and like the Combettes, the '08 version is one of the very best young examples from Leflaive that I have ever seen. Drink: 2020+.

"One of the greatest white wine domaines in Burgundy" remarked Clive Coates.The vineyards steeped in history, the current generation - Anne-Claude Leflaive - can look back to 1717 for the first Leflaive family occupation of the farm buildings that they use today. The domaine was created by Anne-Claude's grandfather, Joseph, who came to Burgundy in 1905. Anne-Claudecontinues the legacy with new vigour and particular attention to biodynamics. In 1997 Anne-Claud took the whole domaine fully biodynamic, after very successful blind tastings the year before, comparing biodynamically produced wine and organic wine from adjacent vines.

Bâtard-Montrachet is a great white Grand Cru in Burgundy's Côte D'or. Its vineyards are located onthe slope beneath Le Montrachet, in the Côte de Beaune. Bâtard-Montrachet's soils are heavier than those surrounding it, made up of brown limestone and gravel, which pave the way for rich, nutty, honeyed and heady wines with good structure. They are not as elegant as those from Chevalier-Montrachet and are broader and weightier than wines from Montrachet.
