  • Goedhuis, November 2018

Auxey Duresses can often be dismissed as a source of awkward Côte de Beaune reds, but in capable hands it can make charming wines. This is accessible and early drinking with plenty of character, full of crunchy red fruits. Its long maceration has helped draw out some creamy tannins to support the fresh, bright vein of acidity that runs through the palate.

  • Neal Martin, January 2019, Score: 87-89

The 2017 Auxey-Duresses Village has a well-defined, slightly earthy bouquet of attractive black fruit. The medium-bodied palate features notes of bilberry and veins of black olive, the modest 12% new oak lending a smooth sheen. The saline, quite rounded finish suggests that this will make fine early drinking. 2020 - 2026

  • Burghound, aPRIL 2019, Score: 88

A pungent nose consists primarily of plum, violet and earth where the latter element also suffuses the reasonably dense flavors that possess excellent punch that carries over to the mildly rustic and youthfully austere finish where the only nit is a touch of warmth. Drink 2023+

  • Decanter, October 2018, Score: 92

Comte Armand's premier cru blend comes from two sites - Les Bréterins and Bas des Duresses - which are combined in more or less equal proportions to produce this sturdy, firm, serious Auxey red. It's sappy and structured with well-integrated 20% new wood. Drink 2022-2027

  • Jancis Robinson, January 2019, Score: 16.5

Mid cherry red. Scented with dark-red fruit. Light herbal/stemmy character giving freshness to the ripeness of the fruit, which is deep and rounded and generous. Sweet cherries on the long finish. Already smooth. Drink 2020-2025

Clos des Épeneaux is Pommard’s most celebrated climat. The 5.23 hectare monopole has been in the Comte Armand family since 1828. Paul Zinetti took over from Benjamin Leroux as régisseur in 2014, and is rising to every challenge at this small, characterful domaine. They also have small holdings in Volnay and Auxey Duresses and, while these wines have the distinctive character of quintessential Côte de Beaune, they are also some of the most sophisticated, nuanced expressions you might taste across these villages. An understated use of new oak matches the textured fruit, and gentle handling in combination with intuitive biodynamic practices afford these wines both strength and delicacy. The domaine has begun to noticeably outpace its neighbours and redefine how the finest terroir of Pommard is capable of not only power but elegance as well.Read less

Region

Auxey Duresses

Auxey Duresses is a lesser known appellation of 107 hectares located in the eastern hills above Meursault. Its slightly cooler climate with mostly north facing slopes enable its wines to be particularly crisp, fresh and occasionally austere in less warm vintages. Though three-quarters of its production is white, there are a handful of growers who produce reds. Due to its more modest status, its wines tend to provide excellent value for money . They are well worth seeking out particularly in warmer vintages.
