Zuccardi's Piedra Infinita Malbecs

We have been following this brilliant estate since first discovering it over four years ago. Ever since, Zuccardi has dominated the Argentinian wine scene, winning countless awards and earning its reputation as one of the region’s most revered, forward-thinking estates. Their Malbecs are intellectual, unique, and incomparable, wowing not only us but also the world’s critics. We are excited to offer the Piedra Infinita, as well as theit two single plot ‘lieux-dits’ cuvées: Supercal and Gravascal from the exceptional 2019 vintage.

A very young, beautiful malbec that is still a bit reductive now. Fresh herbs, white pepper, violets, iron and some ripe black cherries to the nose. Full-bodied on the palate with plenty of powerful, fine tannins. Mineral and super fine-grained. Needs time. Better after 2026.

  • Vinous, April 2024, Score: 96

The 2020 Malbec Finca Piedra Infinita Supercal hails from a small plot in the eponymous, chalk-rich vineyard in Paraje Altamira. Purple in hue. The austere nose features notes of violet, sage and mint over a layer of sour cherry. Dry, restrained and very chalky on the palate, the taut, juicy flow and vibrant, compact mouthfeel lead to an intense, saline-lasting finish. The 2020 is a nuanced, primary red crafted precisely to mitigate the effects of the warm year. Drink 2023-2036.

  • Luis Gutierrez, April 2024, Score: 98

The grapes for the 2020 Finca Piedra Infinita Supercal were the first to be picked from the Piedra Infinita vineyard in the warm 2020 vintage, and the wine is built more around the fruit. It is juicy and pure and has similar levels of alcohol and acidity/freshness as the 2019, but of the two vintages, which I tasted side by side, this feels gentler and rounder. It has complexity despite its young age and has notes of orange peel, iron and blood, with the fine limestone sensation. The vintages are always very marked in this wine because the soil is very extreme and shallow and the vines can suffer in dry and warm conditions. Drink 2023-2030.

Superb depth here. Oyster shells, thyme, wild herbs, ink, graphite and lots of black cherries. A powerhouse of tannins on the full-bodied palate; vertical, colossal. Austere and puristic but super confident and chalky. Polished, too. Drink or hold.

  • Vinous, April 2024, Score: 97

The 2020 Malbec Finca Piedra Infinita Gravascal hails from a tiny plot in the eponymous vineyard in Paraje Altamira, where the soils are rich in gravel and chalk. Purple in the glass. The sharply defined nose delivers rose, mint, plum, raspberry and violet notes. Dry and restrained in the mouth, the lean, taut palate resonates with a rich, chalky texture and juicy mouthfeel. The complex, extremely nuanced red asks intriguing questions of the drinker. The precision is all the more admirable, given the warm year. Drink 2023-2035.

  • Luis Gutierrez, April 2024, Score: 98

There is a lot of subtleness, precision, elegance and harmony in the 2020 Finca Piedra Infinita Gravascal. It comes from a plot that takes well the warmer and cooler vintages like this 2020, when the wine achieved transparency, elegance and precision, which are the three characteristics they seek for in their wines. Like all of the top-of-the-range wines from their property in Paraje Altamira, this fermented with indigenous yeasts in concrete and matured exclusively in concrete and didn't see any oak to keep the poise, elegance and balance while showing the character of the vintage, place and variety. Drink 2024-2032.

They have 46 separate plots in the vineyard, and in this early harvest, they started picking earlier than ever but during the harvest still felt they were too late; but the wines show much better than anticipated. Having the palette of wines to choose from helps in warmer years, when it's more difficult to keep the freshness in the wine, which for them is one of the most important things. It really feels very young and better than expected. They told me they learned a lot from 2017 to manage a year like 2020, when they do a shorter maceration (and in cooler years, they might do a longer maceration). This is gentler than the 2019, with rounder tannins. 8,500 bottles were filled in June 2021. Drink 2024-2032.

  • James Suckling, November 2023, Score: 98

Such a profound nose with plenty of mineral, wild herb, violet and dark cherry aromas and flavors. Full-bodied on the palate with plenty of seamless and powdery tannins which melt into the fruit. Super pristine, polished and refined. An iron fist in a velvet glove. Muscular but intellectual. Better after 2025.
