  • Goedhuis, January 2017

This steep southerly facing vineyard has the benefit of a water supply from a spring in the middle of the vineyard, providing much needed moisture in the hotter period of the summer of 2015. Dense dark Morello cherry aromas. This focuses on sweetness of fruit, with a warm voluptuous mouth feel. A delicious volume, with appealing freshness at the end from this superb monopole site.

  • Neal Martin, December 2016, Score: 94-96

The 2015 Volnay 1er Cru Clos des Ducs needed a little encouragement from the glass and even so, a small fug of reduction remained. However, underneath lay very intense blackberry and raspberry fruit mixed with orange sorbet and even a touch of honey. The palate is medium-bodied with fine tannin. This has more grip and backbone than the other Volnays from d'Angerville, as one would expect given the vineyard, but it easily boasts the most precision on the finish. The class really shows through in this wine and the persistence is outstanding. I expect it to land at the top of my banded score once in bottle. Drink 2022-2050

  • Jancis Robinson, April 2017, Score: 18+

Monopole. Tasted not long before bottling. Mid dark crimson. Comfortable bitter-cherry fruit and lovely fluidity and freshness. Soars above the rest. With a dry chalky finish. Very majestic. Noble and glorious. Long. Drink 2027-2050

Arriving at the family Château in Volnay and standing in the famed Clos des Ducs overlooking the village and its other 1er crus below always gives me a huge thrill. Region

Volnay

A red wine appellation only, wines from Volnay might be considered the most revered of southern Burgundy. They have been celebrated since the 18th century for their delicacy. But they are not fruit forward like those of Beaune or Chorey Lès Beaune nor have the brooding structure of Pommard.Instead, they have superb linearity, focus and poise while sheathed in velvety tannin. This slightly reticent personality comes out even more with a bit of age, though some can be approached very young. There are no grand cru vineyards in Volnay, but there are some excellent premier cru examples including Volnay Les Champans and Volnay Les Caillerets. Chardonnay grown in the shared Santenots vineyard must be labelled as Meursault.
