Tasting Notes
-
Robert Parker, February 2009,
Score: 89+Christmas fruitcake, truffle, cured meats and sweet earth along with black currant notes make for a complex, noble bouquet. In the mouth, some of the vintage’s tell-tale angular and astringent tannins give the wine a slightly attenuated mouthfeel, but there seems to be plenty of concentration, medium to full body, and lots of minerality. My instincts are that this wine is going through a relatively closed, difficult, ungracious state, but I like its potential. Anticipated maturity: 2013-2026+.

Robert Parker, April 2007,
Score: 89-91Following the finest example of La Gaffeliere I have ever tasted (the 2005), the 2006 is a strong effort revealing a dark ruby/purple color as well as aromas of roasted herbs, pain grille, sweet black cherries, currants, cedar, spice box, and earth. This medium-bodied, elegant, moderately tannic St.-Emilion should be drinkable between 2009-2018.

Jancis Robinson, May 2007,
Score: 17Bright crimson. Heady, almost agricultural and charred nose. Really quite substantial, Very distinctive. Dry tannins on the finish but clean and neat. Punchy with good, direct, well-sculpted fruit.Solid and all on the finish rather than the nose. Bracing and impressive length. All on the finish in this wine.

Producer
Château la Gaffelière

Château La Gaffelière is located just outside the old city walls of St. Emilion. Unlike its peers who value flamboyant fruit and upfront power, Château La Gaffelière produces wines that are notably elegant and refined making them gently appealing, though perhaps not the longest lived. Robert Parker equals this Château with a third growth Médoc in terms of quality and describes it "as an interesting buy among St.-Emilion first growths." (Bordeaux, 2003)
Region
St Emilion
South of Pomerol lies the medieval, perched village of St Emilion. Surrounding St Emilion are vines that produce round, rich and often hedonistic wines. Despite a myriad of soil types, two main ones dominate - the gravelly, limestone slopes that delve down to the valley from the plateau and the valley itself which is comprised of limestone, gravel, clay and sand. Despite St Emilion's popularity today, it was not until the 1980s to early 1990s that attention was brought to this region. Robert Parker, the famous wine critic, began reviewing their Merlot-dominated wines and giving them hefty scores. The rest is history as they say. Similar to the Médoc, there is a classification system in place which dates from 1955 and outlines several levels of quality. These include its regional appellation of St Emilion, St Emilion Grand Cru, St Emilion Grand Cru Classé and St Emilion Premier Grand Cru Classé, which is further divided into "A" (Ausone and Cheval Blanc) and "B" (including Angélus, Canon, Figeac and a handful of others). To ensure better accuracy, the classification is redone every 10 years enabling certain châteaux to be upgraded or downgraded depending on on the quality of their more recent vintages.
