Ox uses grapes from three separate blocks to make his 2018 Upper Tintara Valley Shiraz. All three vineyards were planted in 1998 from cuttings taken from the Ancestor Vines plot, planted by Thomas Hardy in 1891. The result is a deeply satisfying Shiraz that packages the DNA of the Ancestor Vines into an earlier drinking format. Beautifully bright plum, raspberry, black cherry and boysenberry mixed with uplifting menthol, fresh pine, lavender and spice. Delicious dark fruit and dark chocolate are wrapped up in velvet tannins with a saline twist. A line of energetic acidity gives movement and lift, making this so easy to drink and enjoy on its own as well as with food. An inviting and hugely versatile wine that is quintessential Shiraz. Drink 2023-2030.

  • Vinous, January 2023, Score: 93

The 2018 Upper Tintara Vineyard is a real crowd-pleaser that will make McLaren Vale fans swoon. Deep crimson in color. It is done in a rich and powerful style with decadent fruit pastille and blackberry fruits, plus a light and attractive dusting of eucalyptus and spice. Dry, mouth-filling, plush, and rich, there is beautiful purity of vibrant black fruit flavors that are well matched to a toasty oak backbone. The finish is generous and chocolatey. Ready to go now but will also drink well for some time to come. Drink 2023-2030

  • Matthew Jukes, January 2023, Score: 18

2018 Upper Tintara Vineyard Shiraz McLaren Vale is made from three plots, all ’98 planted, and they are destemmed with daily pump overs, and they find their way into 2nd fill French oak and three new hogsheads for around 18 months. Dark, swarthy and spicy with an impenetrable black hue, this is a glorious top-flight wine with a mid-tier price. If you have the cash, do carry on; if not, you can stop here. This is a seriously brilliant wine and one that is so deep, rich and powerful and yet not too hard or square. It is a superbly crafted wine, and it will impress all-comers.

  • Goedhuis, January 2022

An elegant, restrained nose of lime flower, lanolin and flint with some peachy undertones. There is a subtle waxiness on the palate which gives depth to the stone fruits and blossom and a soothing, yet taut acidity holds everything in place perfectly. This is so delicately oaked and the use of some concrete eggs in maturation gives a sumptuous, leesy richness. The finish is complex, limey and very long. Drink 2022-2028.

  • Neal Martin, November 21, Score: 93

The 2019 Sémillon, one of my favorite cuvées from this producer, has a wonderful bouquet of peach skin and orange blossom scents, all extremely well defined. The balanced palate offers superb concentration on the entry, flavors of praline mixed with citrus fruit and almond, and an almost resinous note toward the finish. It’s tempting to drink this now, but it deserves 3–5 years in bottle. Drink 2024-2040.

  • Tim Atkin, November 21, Score: 96

This world-class Semillon combines fruit from three sites in Franschhoek, planted in 1902, 1936 and 1942. Three per cent Muscat adds a touch of orange marmalade to the leesy, flinty, lanolin and struck match palate. Less oaky than in the past and all the better for it. Long and complex. 2022-2029.

  • Platter's Wine Guide, November 21, Score: 94

From old vineyards (some date to 1902), concentrated, flavour-packed 2019 shows naartjies, lime zest, quince supported by toasty oak (70% new neutral, 30% ‘egg’ amphora component). Waxy texture, perfume hint from 3% muscat d’Alexandrie. Will get better better.

Christian Pillsbury is incredibly proud of his 2019s, and deservedly so. Bright and lifted, the 2019 Estate Chardonnay offers layer upon layer of irresistible orchard fruit: crisp red apple, golden pear and quince complemented by fresh ginger and lemon. There’s a beautiful line of energy to this wine and a saline freshness backed up by perfectly judged oak, giving sumptuous spice and toasty, hazelnut complexities. Silky, cool and crystalline, and drinking so wonderfully. Drink 2023 -2027.

  • James Suckling, December 2020, Score: 96

Aromas of red cherries, cedar, dry brown spices, forest berries and wood, as well as rose-like perfume. It opens and aromatically enriches with some air. The palate has all the trademark layering of smooth tannins and a smoothly ripe ball of fresh red cherries. Assertive drive to the finish.

  • Vinous, November 2020, Score: 92

A very pale-hued yet elegant style that displays bitter cherry, orange peel and potpourri aromas. The 35% whole bunch component is integrated, offering spice and drive. The acidity is gently refreshing while the tannins are elegant. This vintage perhaps doesn't have the stuffing of the best Ata Rangi's but it is deftly handled; the period the wine spent in barrel was reduced so this pretty style did not become oaky. If you have other recent vintages from Ata Rangi in your cellar, you might want to uncork and enjoy the 2018 first, as it's going to provide plenty of enjoyment in the first 3–8 years of its life. Drink 2022-2028.

  • Jancis Robinson, March 2020, Score: 17.5+

Mid black-purple. Marked, spicy, chocolate oak with a bacon-fat toasty note. Blackberry and violet. Dense and compact, brooding fruit character. Some leafy lift and a touch of flint. Powerful and structured, with firm, polished tannins. Some smokiness and a long, clove finish. Will probably give backbone to a blend! Drink 2024-2034.

  • Huon Hooke, July 2021, Score: 94

Medium to full red colour with a tint of purple and a smoky, earthy, almost graphite-like aroma, broodingly complex and promising to unfold more. The wine is medium to full-bodied yet backed up by abundant firm tannins, the finish imparts a trace of cleansing bitterness and the grip helps carry the finish long. It`s still emerging from its shell and promises more to come if cellared a couple of years.
