Frequently the most difficult of Charles’s grand cru to taste from cask, late as its malo usually is, he explains it habitually shines brighter than the others once in bottle. At our cask tasting it is true that the RSV was a little tight and more difficult to taste than the more open and forward Richebourg, but there was a suave density to the fruit that leaves no doubt as to the calibre of this wine.

The 2016 Romanée Saint-Vivant Grand Cru was the last one to finish its malolactic this year. It has a very pure and focused bouquet, the Malconsorts plus one if you like, sporting outstanding mineralité and tension. The palate is medium-bodied with fine, slightly chalky tannin, conveying plenty of energy and tension, quite sharp in the mouth with a fine bead of acidity and a sustained finish. The plus sign indicates that I am conservative with my score given the late malolactic and it would not surprise me if it steps up a level once in bottle. Drink 2022-2045

Van Canneyt noted that the RSV was the last wine to finish its malo and not surprisingly the nose was firmly reduced. I very much like the intensity of the sleek middle weight flavors that are more muscular than they usually are while delivering excellent length on the backward finish. This was tougher to read than the other wines in the range due to the recently completed malo but it appears to have the underlying material to eventually be a fine example. Drink: 2028+

Dark red-ruby. Distinctly wild aromas of black raspberry, crushed rock, bitter chocolate, cocoa powder and leather lifted by a spicy element. Extremely unevolved following a very late malo but already wonderfully sweet, concentrated and creamy, conveying almost painful density to its black fruit flavors. Firms up dramatically on the rocky, mineral-driven back end. Almost tough today but boasts great potential.

The Romanée-St-Vivant is superb, bursting from the glass with dramatic aromas of red cherry, rich black fruit, smoked duck and a pungent top note of violets. On the palate, the wine is full-bodied and detailed, its velvety tannins swathed in an ample core of sapid, succulent fruit, its finish long and flavourful. Drink 2026-2045

The Hudelots are an ancient Burgundian family whose ancestry can be traced back to Chambolle since before the French Revolution. Needless to say, wine has been in their blood for almost as long. Alain Huedlot began his wine career in 1954 working for his father and other local growers. At the ripe young age of 20, he started renting vineyards from his family in Chambolle Musigny until eventually receiving other small parcels from his father. Following a passionate and whirlwind romance with the granddaughter of Charles Noellat, he married despite protests from her family. This controversial union ensured additional vineyards despite a harrying and lengthy legal battle. Today the domaine owns a total of 10 well-situated hectares, which are split over 5 communes. Alain Hudelot’s grandson Charles Van Canneyt is a man on a mission. Having arrived at the domaine from Champagne only six years ago, he is already considered one of the brightest young talents in the region. Romanée Saint Vivant
Romanée-St-Vivant, which takes its name from the monastery of St-Vivant founded in c. 900, is a Grand Cru vineyard in Vosne-Romanée on the Côte de Nuits in Burgundy. It is the largest of Vosne-Romanée's six Grands Crus and produces red wine only. The vineyard is located on the slope to the north of the town of Vosne-Romanée and is the nearest vineyard to this village. Romanée-Saint-Vivant's soils are deep and rich in clay and lime, which means the wines of Romanée-St-Vivant are usually lighter and less powerful than its neighbours'. Domaine de la Romanée Conti is the largest proprietor, owning over half of the area's 9.5 ha.
