Offers | Glorious Gloria | 2016

Chateau Gloria is fast becoming one of the most exciting insider wines of the entire Bordeaux region. We are delighted to offer the glorious 2016 immediately available for storage or delivery.

In terms of quality Gloria undoubtedly competes with a good number of Cru Classé Chateaux. Its omission from the higher echelons of the ranking is simply because it did not exist in 1855. Henri Martin painstakingly created the estate during the 1940s and 50s, gradually building up parcels of Crus Classés terroirs from his neighbours. Still family run, Gloria’s Cru Bourgeois classification belies the sheer quality of wine now being produced.

From one of the most celebrated vintages of recent years, this will still need some time in the cellar. Very much in keeping with the characteristics of the vintage, this 2016 is classic in style, with pencil and tobacco aromas and a vibrant energetic finish. As Neal Martin said in his original in barrel (en primeur) tasting note: “You come away with the feeling that this Gloria has something up its sleeve for those with patience to cellar it for eight to ten years.”

This wine raises the bar even higher at this excellent estate, reaffirming the chateau’s position as one of the best Cru Bourgeois and best value Bordeaux you can find. At under £40 per bottle on the table, we strongly recommend slipping a case into the cellar.

    Goedhuis, April 2016,
    Score: 90-92

An excellent wine, with masses of succulent fruit. Juicy Merlot fruit flavours are complemented by a bite of Cabernet freshness. Dark black fruits and crushed violets linger on the finish. A great bottle for mid-term ageing.

  • NM1

    Neal Martin, July 2019,
    Score: 93

The 2015 Gloria is another Saint-Julien that has improved over the last 12 months. It has a bolder and more exuberant bouquet than some of its peers, featuring lush blackberry and blueberry fruit and revealing a touch of iodine and crushed violet with aeration. The medium-bodied palate displays supple tannin, a fine bead of acidity and very pure fruit intensity (black cherries, bilberry and boysenberry), although it clams shut toward the finish. Slightly more modern in style than its peers, this should still age with style. Tasted blind at the Southwold 2015 Bordeaux tasting.

  • NM

    Neal Martin, April 2016,
    Score: 90-92

The 2015 Gloria is a blend of 60% Cabernet Sauvignon, 27% Merlot, 7% Cabernet Franc and 6% Petit Verdot cropped at 51 hl/ha, matured in 40% new wood. It was picked between 21 September and finishing on 7 October with the Cabernet Sauvignon. It has a fragrant bouquet with dark cherries, cedar and touches of cigar box - classic Saint Julien in many ways, though it does not have the complexity of great recent vintages such as the 2010. The palate is well balanced, clean and pure with fine tannin. The acidity is nicely judged, not a million miles away from the 2015 Lagrange in terms of its refinement, but this has perhaps a touch more detail on the finish. Perhaps one of the more approachable Saint Julien wines this vintage, give this 4-5 years in bottle and then drink over the next 20 years.

  • AG

    Antonio Galloni, April 2016,
    Score: 87-89

The 2015 Gloria is intense and quite powerful, but also a bit rough around the edges. Iron, smoke, red stone fruit, pencil shavings and tobacco give the wine its rustic personality, an impression that is reinforced by the burly tannins. There is good intensity in the glass, even if some angular contours remain. Hints of inky crème de cassis and spice add the closing shades of Saint-Julien expression. Tasted three times.

    James Suckling, April 2016,

Pretty Gloria with plenty of tension and energy. Full body yet silky textured and extremely long. Exciting.

    Jancis Robinson, April 2016,
    Score: 17

Exceptionally deep crimson. Deep and crisp and even on the nose. Very good concentrated glossy fruit. Polished and racy. A very neat, accomplished rendition that's almost drinkable already, so well handled are the tannins. Bravo! Showing much better than its stablemate Ch St Pierre when I tasted it, this could be GV. • TA

    Tim Atkin, May 2016,
    Score: 95

Another property that has excelled in 2015. This is gloriously perfumed and appealing, with graphite and liquorice on the nose, followed by layers of crunchy black fruits, savoury tannins and well integrated (40% new) oak. Fresh, balanced and very long. Drink: 2022-32

  • WS

    Wine Spectator, April 2016,
    Score: 90-93

Rock-solid, with loads of bramble and bay leaf underscoring theripe blackberry and black currant fruit. There's lots of grip, but this is plush, staying focused through the toasty finish. Shows nice refinement.

Tasting Notes

  • GDH

    Goedhuis, April 2017,
    Score: 91-93

As always a wine that sits beautifully in its category for its price quality ratio. Shining purple colour, it has pure dark elderberry aromas. In the palate, it is a very enticing harmonious style, with ripe rounded black fruit flavours, a feeling of richness, and subtle smooth tannins. A real star. DR

  • NM

    Neal Martin, Apri l2017,
    Score: 93-95

The 2016 Gloria is a blend of 60% Cabernet Sauvignon, 30% Merlot, 3% Petit Verdot and 7% Cabernet Franc that was picked from 29 September until 17 October. It is matured in slightly less oak than the Saint-Pierre, at 40%. This is a little more backward and broody compared to the Saint-Pierre and indeed its Saint Julien peers, demanding more coaxing from the glass. It almost reluctantly unfolds and unveils subtle pencil box and dry tobacco aromas. The palate is more outgoing than the aromatics with a vibrant, almost citrus-fresh opening, tensile tannins and a satisfying sense of energy. This feels nimble and agile in the mouth with a touch of white pepper lingering on the aftertaste. You come away with the feeling that this Gloria has something up its sleeve for those with patience to cellar it for eight to ten years. Drink Date 2024 - 2060

  • AG1

    Antonio Galloni, January 2019,
    Score: 96

The 2016 Gloria is one of the undisputed stars of this vintage. Rich, deep and explosive, the 2016 possesses tremendous intensity in all of its dimensions. Sweet red cherry, tobacco, menthol, licorice and dried rose petal all add complexity. In 2016 Gloria is a real head-turner. It should be a fabulous value as well. There is not much else to say. 2026 - 2046

  • AG

    Antonio Galloni, April 2017,
    Score: 92-95

The 2016 Gloria is striking. Ripe, dense and beautifully layered in the glass, the 2016 exudes class. Super-ripe red cherry, plum, pomegranate, rose petal, cinnamon and licorice notes abound, but it is the wine's juiciness and overall texture that are most appealing, A super-classic Saint-Julien, Gloria delivers serious quality for the money. Despite its obvious depth and fleshiness, the 2016 Gloria is also one of the most restrained, gracious Saint-Juliens readers will come across.

  • JS

    James Suckling, April 2017,
    Score: 93-94

Dense and layered red with berry and tobacco character, a full body and a savory finish. Got it all here.

  • JR

    Jancis Robinson, April 2017,
    Score: 16.5

Sweet and energetic and very glossy. Just a little austere on the end. Bone dry. Quite demanding. Just not quite enough ripe fruit for the not inconsiderable tannins. Drink 2024-2038

  • TA

    Tim Atkin, May 2017,
    Score: 94

Working with its new winery for the first time in 2016, Gloria has made a fine, aromatic, well structured blend, with more tannin and concentration than the 2015, but similar levels of perfume and finesse. Serious and age worthy, it’s sappy and long. 2024-36
