  • Goedhuis, December 2019

For many, Rugiens is the jewel in Pommard’s crown. Vibrant purple in colour, this was a little backward on tasting in cask, but that is to be expected for such a deep, compact wine. Very full and intense, this exudes power. The mighty tannins are perfectly woven into the dark fruits, complemented by a gentle freshness and lift on the finish.

  • Neal Martin, January 2020, Score: 91-93

The 2018 Pommard Les Rugiens 1er Cru comes from the lieu-dit of Rugiens-Haut, on shallow soils. This is 100% de-stemmed. It has a light, airy bouquet of fragrant cranberry and raspberry aromas. The palate is medium-bodied with fine tannins, quite dark fruit and a markedly saline, focused finish. Moderate length, but there is good energy here. Drink 2022-2038

  • Burghound, April 2020, Score: 91-94

A firmly reduced nose does not allow any nuance to be appreciated. More interesting are the racy and almost painfully intense tautly muscular flavors that possess plenty of minerality that imparts a refreshing salinity on the linear, austere, compact and tightly wound finish. This excellent effort is a 'buy and forget you own it' wine that should age gracefully for years. Outstanding sweet spot. Drink 2035+

  • Jasper Morris MW, January 2020, Score: 92-95

Northern part just before it switches to ENE. Fair depth of colour, more red than purple. Complex nose, there is a lot going on here. More red than black, complex too on the palate now with some darker notes, keeps changing, ripe but vibrating. Dense and quite classy.

We are delighted to introduce the wines of Thomas Bouley in 2015, joining our selection of great Volnay domaines. Those customers who bought Burgundy en primeur in the early days of Goedhuis Co may have a sense of déjà vu! Johnny first bought from Thomas’s father Jean-Marc in the 1980s. After a few years’ sabbatical it is wonderful to be reacquainted with this prestigious domaine whose wines we consider very special indeed. Much has happened in the intervening years. Son Thomas now makes the wines and is one of the Côte de Beaune’s most dedicated growers, with an unstoppable energy and enthusiasm. They have also just completed one of the area’s most sophisticated new wineries right in the heart of Volnay. This investment will ensure that the already high quality of the domaine will only ascend. This is a great estate making wines which truly reflect Volnay and Pommard.Read less

Region

Pommard

A long popular appellation, Pommard is yet another exclusive red wine area which produces by far the most structured reds of the Côte de Beaune. It extracts rich body and long ageing potential from the limestone/iron-rich clay soil. Some examples can be markedly rustic, yet as time has passed and winemaking know-how has improved, Pommard's wines are becoming softer and more approachable when young. Its vines cover 317 hectares of which over a third are premier cru vineyards. Several have pronounced following and even one, Les Rugiens, is being pushed to become a grand cru.
