Offers | Brunello di Montalcino Conti Costanti 2015

We are delighted to offer a small parcel of Conti Costanti's superb 2015 Brunello di Montalcino.

At an altitude of 440 metres, the 12-hectare Conti Costanti estate sits at the limit of what the Sangiovese grape can physically achieve. This highly respected winery located just outside the walls of Montalcino has been in the hands of the Costanti family since the 16th century.

Soil, exposure and elevation play a vital role here in determining the style and longevity of the Brunellos produced. Costanti’s signature is one of striking elegance, femininity and intensity, a combination of the power of Montalcino with the freshness and firmness that comes from vineyards situated at a high altitude in this northern part of the zone.

The warmth of 2015 played perfectly into winemaker Andrea Costanti’s hands. The moderate temperatures at this lofty elevation, and importantly the cool evenings, created the perfect balance of ripeness and freshness. The conditions around harvest time couldn’t have been better.

One of Costanti’s closest neighbours is the renowned Biondi Santi winery at Il Greppo and both of these wines share many similarities in this ‘fairy-tale vintage’, most notably a fine, firm structure that will allow for superb longevity. The temptation would be to drink this 2015 Brunello relatively early due to its irresistible sweet red fruit flavours and silky texture, but there is an underlying structure which will allow it to age for at least a decade.

Our allocation of Costanti’s Brunello is limited to 35 six bottle cases and 5 cases in magnum. If you can snap one of these up quickly, you will be treated to one of the most memorable wines of the 2015 vintage.

The Conti Costanti 2015 Brunello di Montalcino is vinous and ripe with lots of energy that comes from plummy black fruit and dried blackberry. The wine is front-loaded with those varietal tones, but the mouthfeel reveals a more delicate and softer approach than you might expect given the potency of that first nose. The wine achieves harmony, and offers a nice, long finish. The label states that fruit comes from the Colle al Matrichese, but I am not sure if that is an official estate vineyard designation. Either way, this is a serious cellar-worthy Brunello to sip and consider with a platter of fine cheeses.

Costanti's 2015 Brunello di Montalcino explodes from the glass with a classic display of leather, dusty earth, dried strawberries, and savory spice. On the palate, soft, silky textures usher in ripe red fruits, complemented by sweet spices and brisk acids, which create a pure, feminine expression, as hints of fine tannin slowly mount. The finish is medium in length, with just a slight tug of tannic heft. It captures the sun-kissed nature of the vintage wonderfully, and while the 2015 may not be a wine for the ages, it will provide quite a bit of pleasure with mid-term cellaring. Drink 2020-2028

Lustrous ruby. Restrained power on the nose. Bags of finely grained tannins lift lively cherry fruit. Medium bodied yet mouth-filling. Muscular and refined. Easily one of the top wines of this vintage. Drink 2020-2030

Deep red. Perfumed, saline aromas of red cherry, raspberry nectar, herbs, violet, red roses and minerals on the captivating nose; this really opens and improves with aeration, so make sure you open the bottle at least an hour or so ahead. Clean fresh, and saline, with a metallic edge and a brooding quality to the vibrant, juicy red cherry and raspberry flavors that are long and deep. Sneaky concentration and real power here, but a little inscrutable currently; this lovely wine needs to be cellared for a good five to six years to be enjoyed at its fullest. I have no doubt it will prove a memorable wine in due course, hence the plus sign on my score. Drink 2025-2035

Deep cherry red colour. This is a deeply structured Brunello, with striking red berry fruits. Direct and intense an attractively bold style, powerful and long on the finish.
