Offers | 10 Years On | Bordeaux 2010

The world was a very different place when this tasting of 200 of the finest Bordeaux from 2010 (one of its most highly acclaimed vintages this century) took place, attended by our Buying Director David Roberts MW. His full write up can be seen here.

David reported that the euphoria and excitement was as high as ever after a great tasting. Last week he was reminded of this wonderful event by the release of Neal Martin’s article and notes from the tasting which lifted his spirits in so many ways. It is the perfect opportunity to offer a select number of these stunning gems which we currently hold in stock.

Neal’s review refers to his initial primeur report quoting: “another Royal Flush” for Bordeaux with back to back great vintages in 2009 and 2010. He goes on to say that this year he found “found the Cabernet Sauvignon “in excelsis” and that “the best 2010s on the Left Bank are some of the greatest wines you will ever drink.”

David comments: “This tasting ten years on really has shown the very best wines have lived up to all expectations with the greatest classed growths producing sensational wines of exceptional quality. Whilst I agree with Neal that overall the Left Bank wines of the Medoc had a greater degree of consistency and overall quality, my equal highest scoring wine was the exquisite Le Pin in Pomerol which I placed alongside Mouton at 19.5/20 (interestingly my two equal top wines 6 years ago tasting blind in bottle), just pipping his favourite Ch Latour at 19/20 and I found many other delights in the Right Bank.“

Highlights

  • In St Estèphe Ch Montrose (99 points) stood head and shoulders above it peers, this is not to say that the other wines in the appellation were not hugely fine, but the 2010 Montrose just had a further line of class.

  • Pauillac was extraordinary: "breathtaking" Latour achieving a faultless 100 points, and "hot on its heels is a stunning Mouton" with 98 points. From 2ème to 5ème Cru there was amazing consistency with Grand Puy Lacoste (97 points) proving to be the steal of the appellation scoring alongside many of its Second Growth peers.

  • As always, St Julien was a treat and extremely harmonious. Ducru Beaucaillou (96 points) stole the show on the day. The Léovilles (Barton 95, Poyferre 97, Las Cases 96) confirmed their outstanding reputation; and we also have a few cases of the excellent Clos du Marquis (92 points).

  • Just a few miles south in Margaux, Ch Brane Cantenac (92+ points) really stood out and we have a small parcel of rare single magnums.

  • Pessac-Léognan once again shows its prowess. Both Haut Brion (97 points) and La Mission Haut Brion (98 points) possess extraordinary pedigree, while the "magnificent" Domaine de Chevalier (94 points) represents outstanding value for the vintage.

2010 has maintained its reputation as one of the great vintages in recent years. Neal comments, “After 10 years, many of the 2010s are on the cusp of their respective drinking windows – ajar but not wide open” and recommends several hours decanting for even the lesser wines if you are going to open a bottle anytime soon. These are wines which will benefit from further ageing and will provide extraordinary pleasure to more than a generation of wine lovers just as illustrious years such as 1982, 1961 and 1945 have done before.
