Tasting Notes
-
Burghound, January 2015,
Score: 92-94(from a 1.1 ha parcel of 55+ year old vines). A ripe and extremely fresh nose exhibits perfumed aromas of cassis, earth, spice, plum liqueur and the classic Nuits animale character along with a background touch of wood. There is a lovely sense of underlying tension to the velvet-textured broad-shouldered yet refined flavors that exude a fine bead of minerality onto the balanced, suave and mouth coating finale. This is a bit less structured than it usually is and certainly less so than the Vaucrains if only just. Drink 2025+

Sarah Marsh, November 2014,
Score: 18.25This has an aromatic, floral note with higher spices and touch of white pepper. The palate is silky and rippling; a suave wine which streams elegantly across the palate. Lovely long vivid finish. Excellent tension and lovely long and satin finish. Discreet. Cool and supple finish. Score 18.25. From 2023

Producer
Domaine Henri Gouges

The family Gouges are renowned for their terrroir-driven style with very little new oak influence. The wines are the epitome of Nuits-St-Georges and benefit from some bottle ageing.
Region
Nuits-Saint-Georges
The second largest town after Beaune, Nuits St. Georges is known for ample wines that have textured tannins and rich fruit. Unlike other famous Côte de Nuits villages, it has no Grand Crus but does have a handful of exceptional premier cru vineyards such as Clos de l'Arlot, Les Pruliers and AuxMurgers. Its wines can be occasionally rustic, and this sets them apart from many of the more northern appellations as well as from the neighbouring Côte de Beaune whose wines (apart from Pommard) tend to be less structured and more fruit forward. This is no doubt due to a slightly increased presence of clay especially on the Primeaux-Prissey area of the appellation. Notable producers include Domaine de l'Arlot, Jean Grivot and Meo-Camuzet.
