Tasting Notes
-
Burghound,
Score: 91Surprisingly given the normal character of the Genevrières, this is aromatically much more reserved and backward than either of the prior wines with tight, spicy, intense flavors that offer superb clarity of expression and a racy, vibrant, mineral-infused and explosive finish blessed with stunning intensity. This will require a few years to really open up and develop the superb underlying material. In a word, terrific. Drink Now
Producer
Château Lafon

Dominique Lafon took over the management of the estate from his father, René, in 1987. Much of the estate was managed with sharecroppers which he has gradually removed and now the entire 13.8 hectare estate is solely managed by Domaine des Comtes Lafon. Their cellars are the deepest in Burgundy.Managed using biodynamic principles, the wines are barrel fermented and late bottled (nearly two years post-vintage) producing wines that are balanced yet extremeley deep and complex.
Region
Meursault
Meursault is the first great white wine area that one stumbles upon on leaving Beaune. Unlike other white dominated appellations in Burgundy, Meursault has no grand cru vineyards. It nonetheless has significant flair and power which make up for this deficiency. Indeed, if tasted blind some of these wines could even surpass other Burgundian grand crus. They are no fainting daisies. This may partially be due to Meursault's lower water table which enables the roots to delve deep in the soil picking up many trace minerals and which further stresses the vines. In addition, the cellars are more profound and cooler, enabling long fermentations, which increase complexity and longevity. Some interesting red wines are also made.
