2019 has excited across the board, but, perhaps nowhere more so than at village level. Some years, the gulf between village, Premier Cru and Grand Cru can be huge, and a justification of Burgundy’s famed classification system. But in years such as 2019, when climatic and ripening conditions conspire just so, not only are the Grands and Premiers Crus special, the village cuvées also punch far above their weight. Shun them at your peril.
Join us on a road trip through the famous villages of the Côte d’Or, beginning in Marsannay, the Côte de Nuit’s most northerly red wine outpost, to savour the acclaimed wines of Cyril Audoin, before making our way down to the southern tip of the Côte de Beaune with Justin Girardin’s bright and energetic Santenay Blanc. These wines radiate the ripe fruit characters of the vintage whilst maintaining, in the words of Ben Leroux, "fabulous terroir identity".
This selection gives us the opportunity to sample the famous villages of Gevrey Chambertin, Vosne Romanée, Morey St Denis and, finally, Nuits St Georges, thanks to the latest introduction to our portfolio: the delightful Domaine Legros. In the south, we have a classic white wine line-up, with a focus on the great appellations of Meursault, Puligny Montrachet and Chassagne Montrachet - each from specialists within their villages, Jean-Philippe Fichet, Jean-Marc Boillot and Bastien Coffinet-Duvernay.
Amidst one of the smallest harvests in the last 20 years, what better way to enjoy some of its delights than from some of the most exciting villages in the region?
