The 2011 Gevrey-Chambertin Clos Saint-Jacques 1er Cru (magnum) has a wonderful bouquet of pure red currant, cranberry, briar and hint of wild heather. The medium-bodied palate offers fine tannin that provides good backbone, firm grip and a sense of symmetry and focus, and the finish is saline and sappy. This is like a younger brother of the 2010 Clos Saint-Jacques. Impressive for the vintage. Drink 2022-2040

A very pretty and expressive nose features notes of relatively high-toned red berry fruit allied with ample amounts of earth and sauvage characters. The lighter weight (but by no means dilute) middle weight flavors exude an intense minerality while displaying excellent delineation and punch on the balanced and impressively long finish that evidences just a hint of acid tang. This doesn't have the sheer density of say the 2009, 2010 or 2012 vintages but I very much like the flavor authority. Note that this benefitted enormously from several hours of air, indeed the wine was notably better the next day. In sum, this won't knock you out out with power but it's one classy and ultra-pure wine. Drink from 2021+
Maison Louis Jadot
Founded in 1859 by Louis Jadot, Maison Louis Jadot has always been situated in the centre of Beaune in the heart of the Burgundy vineyards. Managed by three generations of the Jadot family and then by the Gagey family assisted by Jacques Lardière in the cellar, Jadot is now directed by Pierre Henry Gagey, who has introduced a new wine making team, Frédéric Barnier and Guillaume Large. Since careful ageing in wooden barrels is so very important for the balance, aromas and the ageing potential of a great wine, in 1996, Louis Jadot entered into partnership with a firm of coopers, forming Cadus Cooperage, established in Ladoix Serrigny. This allows them to control their wood sourcing and the barrel production. Maison Louis Jadot now controls 105 hectares in Burgundy with more than 70 hectares in the Côte d'Or, exclusively in Premier and Grand Cru. They produce both negociant wines under the Maison Louis Jadot label and a number of Domaines: Gagey, Duc de Magenta, Louis Jadot and Héritiers de Louis Jadot.
The greatest village in terms of notable grand cru vineyards, Gevrey Chambertin has no less than 9 of them including its most famous Chambertin and Chambertin Clos de Bèze, and includes a premier cru vineyard that many people deem grand cru in quality - Clos St. Jacques. It encompasses approximately 400 hectares under vine also making it the largest top quality vineyard area in the Côte de Nuits. Gevrey-Chambertin has many followers who seek out its deeply coloured, robust and textured wines. They are often firmer than the neighbouring appellations of Chambolle Musigny and Vosne Romanée and can take several years to soften once released. Due to its size and reputation, the list of excellent producers is noteworthy and many are worth seeking out.
