    Plump, fleshy but poised, this medium-full bodied wine was produced with a notable 68% Cabernet Sauvignon (normally only 55%) which gives the 2008 a more focused than flashy feel. Its fine tannins linger on the palate pointing to the fact that this wine is a bit more muscular than usual.

    The 2008 Pavillon Rouge didn’t show quite as well as I had hoped, but is still an elegant, berry-scented, spicy, soft Pavillon Rouge with good depth, sweet tannins, and an attractive finish. It can be drunk now or cellared or 12-15 years. Drink: 2011 - 2026

    The second wine, the 2008 Pavillon Rouge du Chateau Margaux, represents 47% of the crop (keep in mind that 17% of the total crop was sold off in bulk), and is composed of 68% Cabernet Sauvignon, 26% Merlot, and the rest mostly Petit Verdot with a tiny dollop of Cabernet Franc. It is a beautiful wine exhibiting classic purity along with red and black fruits intermixed with licorice, tobacco leaf, and floral nuances. Sweet, round tannins, and a lovely forward freshness suggest this stunning second wine should drink well young, yet last for 15+ years. Drink: 2009 - 2024

    Second wine which soaked up most of the 2008 Merlot. Mid crimson. Quite delicate and fragrant but no sign of unripeness. Quite angular. Lots of fine tannin. Much less fleshy than Pavillon usually is - lighter rather than softer than the grand vin this year.

Known as the most elegant and aromatic First Growth due to its Cabernet-friendly, sandy soil, Château Margaux is owned by the Mentzelopoulos family. The estate's vineyard holdings amount to almost 200 acres, though a much smaller percentage is selected for the grand vin to ensure exceptional concentration.

Margaux

Plump, silky and seductive are the words often used to describe wines from Margaux. Because of their style, they tend to be user friendly and more approachable when young. This is in part due to its terroir which is comprised of the thinnest soil as well as the highest proportion of chunky gravel in all of the Médoc. It drains well but also is it more susceptible to vintage variation. Margaux wines tend to have the highest proportions of Merlot within the core of the Médoc further adding to their ample roundness and openness. Margaux is home to the largest number of classified growths including its namesake first growth, Château Margaux, as well as third growths, Palmer and d'Issan.
