    David Schildknecht, June 2010,
    Score: 90-91+/100

Reflecting three barrels from two sources, Potel's Bellene 2008 Chambertin smells of ripe cherry, chocolate, and rose petals; offers rich fruit and a plush texture; but also incorporates tannins that convey a degree of gum-numbing -such as I encountered in other wines of this collection - to the otherwise sweetly persistent finish. This is thus another of those impressively rich Roche de Bellene 2008s that will nonetheless need to gain complexity and finesse as well as diminish in tannic abrasion if it is to outperform in bottle my present rating from barrel. But, to be sure, it is a wine that looks likely to hold together for at least a decade. Drink: 2010 - 2020. 90-91+/100/

Producer

Maison Roche de Bellene

Son of the family who used to own the illustrious Domaine de la Pousse d’Or, Nicolas Potel set up his négociant label Maison Roche de Bellene in 2008. A Bourguignon through and through, Nicolas’ unrivalled local network of thoroughly reliable grower-suppliers allows him to source fruit from the most sought-after parcels in the Côte. He also produces a selection of domaine wines (under Domaine de Bellene). The emphasis remains to this day on well-sited venerable vines and viticulture and the Maison Roche de Bellene label is the superlative source of attractive, well-priced Burgundy wines. Nicolas chose the name ‘Bellene' in honour of the ancient Roman name for Beaune.

Region

Chambertin

Gevrey Chambertin lies well to the north of the Cote de Nuits. It has no less than 9 grand cru vineyards and the most famous of these is Chambertin. Often considered the greatest of all red Burgundies for its complexity, power and intensity, Chambertin's fine wines are unsurprisingly rare and are priced accordingly. They also need years to develop to their full potential, but are undoubtedly worth the wait.
