Tasting Notes
-
Antonio Galloni, September 2013,
Score: 92-95The 2011 Batard-Montracht is deep, powerful and earthy. Even within the context of Batard, this is a full-bodied, massive, powerful wine. There is plenty of personality, the question is really whether the Batard will find a sense of balance and finesse over time, or if it is always going to be a brute. Drink 2017+

Allen Meadows, June 2013,
Score: 90-94An introverted yet quite fresh nose of white flowers, apple, pear and soft spice hints. There is excellent concentration to the extract-rich flavors that culminate in an odd finish of menthol and something that is hard to describe but completely atypical. This may or may not correct itself and while the underlying material appears to be excellent, this is quite difficult to judge. Drink 2022+

Lucien le Moine

Lucien Lemoine is the name of the micro-negociant operation founded by Lebanese husband and wife team Mounir and Rotem Saouma. Mounir used to live and work in a monastery but left to study Oeonology and pursue his passion for Chardonnay and Pinot Noir. Several years living and working in Burgundy helped Mounir learn the ropes while wife Rotem orientated her studies in Dijon towards wine. Mounir's time in the Cistercian monastery is the inspiration behind the name of their operation: 'le Moine' means monk in French and Lucien was the name given to him by the monks. Lucien Le Moine sources exclusively premier cru or grand cru vineyard parcels and raises them in their vaulted cellars in Beaune, bringing a maximum of 100 barrels to the market each year.
Region
Bâtard-Montrachet
Bâtard-Montrachet is a great white Grand Cru in Burgundy's Côte D'or. Its vineyards are located onthe slope beneath Le Montrachet, in the Côte de Beaune. Bâtard-Montrachet's soils are heavier than those surrounding it, made up of brown limestone and gravel, which pave the way for rich, nutty, honeyed and heady wines with good structure. They are not as elegant as those from Chevalier-Montrachet and are broader and weightier than wines from Montrachet.
