  • Robert Parker, June 2007, Score: 90

Although one of the appellation's more tannic 2004s, the tannin is beautifully balanced by sweetblack currant fruit, spring flower, camphor, and licorice notes. This impeccably well-made, medium-bodied Margaux reveals a lovely integration of acidity, tannin, and wood. Give it 2-3 years of bottle age, and drink it over the following two decades. This estate appears to be performing at a high quality level over recent vintages. Drink 2009-2029

  • Robert Parker, June 2006, Score: 91-93

Over the last fifteen years, Malescot Saint-Exupery has possessed a classic Margaux fragrance, a racy, stylish personality, beautiful purity, and a combination of both power and elegance. The deep ruby/purple-tinged 2004 boasts sumptuous aromas of blue fruits, black currants, a whiff of acacia flowers, and a hint of truffles. This medium-bodied Margaux possesses wonderful sweetness, excellent concentration, impeccable balance, and admirable length. Drink 2007-2018 Although the 2004 has closed down and appears shorter than it did last year, it reveals a fragrant bouquet of red and black fruits interwoven with truffle, coffee, spice, and cherry characteristics. It is medium-bodied and elegant, but less substantial in the finish than last year. Give it 2-3 years of cellaring, and drink it over the following 12-15 years. Drink 2008-2023

  • Jancis Robinson, April 2005, Score: 16.5

Not the most concentrated colour. Rather stewed fruit flavours which lack freshness. I yearn for just a tiny bit more acidity. There's certainly ripeness here, and tannins, but I'd love just alittle more lift to give it energy. Drink 2013-2018

Producer

Château Malescot St Exupéry

Contrary to literary illusions, this château was not named after the author of the celebrated book, Le Petit Prince. It took its name from two owners, Simon Malescot and Comte Jean-Baptiste de Saint-Exupéry. Last year Johnny discovered that the château belonged to his English family in the early20th century making it a true Goedhuis selection.

Region

Margaux

Plump, silky and seductive are the words often used to describe wines from Margaux. Because of their style, they tend to be user friendly and more approachable when young. This is in part due to its terroir which is comprised of the thinnest soil as well as the highest proportion of chunky gravel in all of the Médoc. It drains well but also is it more susceptible to vintage variation. Margaux wines tend to have the highest proportions of Merlot within the core of the Médoc further adding to their ample roundness and openness. Margaux is home to the largest number of classified growths including its namesake first growth, Château Margaux, as well as third growths, Palmer and d'Issan.
