    Fürst’s 2016s are razor sharp and fragrant. This Centgrafenberg Grosses Gewächs (grand cru) has crunchy high-acid red fruits in its youth – red currant and pomegranate. There is a little spice of pink peppercorns and some aromatic smokiness from the new oak. The tannins are fine grained but grippy, with a graphite, savoury structure.

    The triassic sandstone rocks of Centgrafenberg bring forth this tender wine. A faint, flinty whiff of reduction accompanies the floral perfume, leading to a palate which encapsulates utterly pure red fruits resting at the very core of this elegant, understated wine. With 85% whole-bunch ferment, the flavours are tart, vivid and fresh, reminiscent of cranberry and Morello cherry. The elegant structure is like a veil of silk, tender but exceptionally durable. One of the most famous names of German Pinot for those in know, the Fürsts have been growing grapes since 1638. Paul Fürst, the current family member at the helm, took over the estate in 1975. Dynamic and determined, he increased the family vineyard holdings from 6 to 50 hectares and established Burgundian vinification methods. Today, they produce some of the most delicious Pinot Noirs in Germany. Pure, silky and terroir-driven, they embody Germany’s poised and ethereal style at its best which Paul describes as ‘crystalline and elegant’.

This region in central Germany is mainly planted with white varieties. However, the small proportion of Spätburgunder (Pinot Noir) plantings – only 20% of the vineyard area – mean it is emerging as Germany’s premium red wine producing region, thanks especially to growers like Paul Fürst, whose crystalline, pure wines are leading the way. Growers are planting with Dijon clones, which produce silky, precise wines. The cru system here (Grosse Gewäch = Grand Cru) will reward any Pinot lover looking for exemplary quality beyond Burgundy.
