    A rich Pauillac nose jumps out of the glass, with lots of blackcurrant, cassis, and caramel/nougat/milk chocolate hints. The palate has a pure, supple entry, full rounded mouthfeel and generous whilst being wonderfully balanced. The flavours are true to the nose with an almost mineral precision courtesy of the juicy acidity, fine integrated tannins. It has a touch of bitter caramel on the long finish.

    The 2019 Lacoste-Borie has a really quite gorgeous bouquet with blackberry and freshly picked raspberry while subtle floral scents emerge with time. The oak is neatly integrated here. The palate is medium-bodied with supple tannins and well judged acidity. Hints of graphite give away its Pauillac origins towards the finish. This is a well-crafted Lacoste-Borie that is approachable yet has the substance to age. Very fine. Drink 2023 - 2040

    Some traces of the warmth of summer here in that fruits are brambly with traces of fig and just a little soft on the finish. It's still a great quality Pauillac and one that will deliver this well-loved 2nd wine's signature success, but I'd pick the 2018 or 2016 as more representative of what it can do at its best.     Pepper, flowers and red fruits open the wine before finding the soft, medium-bodied, fresh, sweet red berries on the palate and in the refined, spicy finish. Enjoy this while waiting for the Grand Vin to develop. It will offer pleasure early.

Château Grand-Puy-Lacoste

Grand Puy Lacoste sits on top of one of the steepest slopes in Pauillac, a whole 16 metres above the main flatlands! Hardly Himalayan, but the extra 16 metres of pebble-enriched soil results inparticularly excellent drainage. François-Xavier Borie is at the helm of this very impressive château which was purchased in 1978 from Monsieur Dupin.

Region

Pauillac

Due south of St Estèphe lies the appellation of Pauillac, the king of Left Bank communes. It is home to three first growths as well as a plethora of other classified growths. Pauillac's renowned well-draining, gravelly soils enable its dominant grape Cabernet Sauvignon to reach fantastic heights of complexity and concentration. As a result, Pauilac's wines tend to be full-bodied with compact tannins and good freshness. Its aromatics are often what one associates with classic Bordeaux: pencil shavings, black currant and occasional mint. Some of the most famous châteaux of the commune are Latour, Mouton Rothschild, Lafite Rothschild, Pichon Baron, Pichon Lalande and Lynch Bages.
