En Primeur | Volnay
A red wine appellation only, wines from Volnay might be considered the most revered of southern Burgundy. They have been celebrated since the 18th century for their delicacy. They have superb linearity, focus and poise all sheathed in velvety tannin. There are no Grand Cru vineyards, but there are some excellent Premier Cru examples including Volnay Les Champans and Volnay Les Caillerets. We’re limiting purchases to 1 or 2 cases per wine due to high demand. Please contact your account manager or wine@goedhuis.com to discuss larger quantities.
2021 Volnay 1er Cru Clos des Angles Nicolas Rossignol
£375.00 In Bond £466.07 Inc VAT-
Goedhuis, December 2022
Clos des Angles is a warm vineyard sitting beneath Clos des Duc. Sufficiently confident in the quality of the stems, Nicolas whole bunch fermented 15% of the fruit, creating a very floral style. Alpine fruits mixed with cherry and red currant. Sweet and luscious, generously textured, with broad layered tannins. Very good length and depth.
2021 Volnay 1er Cru Clos des Chênes Ch de Meursault
£340.00 In Bond £424.07 Inc VAT-
Goedhuis, December 2022
Situated on the cooler, higher slopes of this highly respected vineyard at 270 metres up above sea level. Brilliant purple colour this has both muscle and tension. Savoury dark berry fruits, a deep volume and breadth, with powerful richness. The tannins are present but kept in check by the weight of fruit. This has fine ageing potential.

Glowing mid purple with quite a striking elegance. A bouncy vibrant fruit then a slightly drier patch behind, but I think this is temporary as there is easily enough fruit on the palate. Shows the lifted harmonious pinot of this excellent vineyard. Drink from 2026-2032.
2021 Volnay 1er Cru Les Mitans Benjamin Leroux
£456.00 In Bond £563.27 Inc VAT-
Goedhuis, December 2022
Mitans derives from the old French word for middle or centre, aptly for this Cru which lies at the foot of the slope just beneath the village, directly in the heart of the appellation. The soil here is fine clay, creating a very composed wine. It totally jumps out of the glass, red cherry and sloe. Such a pretty wine, perfumed and aromatic. The tannins are gentle and carefully enveloped in the voluptuous texture. Quite delicious.

Half a crop, 6 barrels made. Once again this is paler in colour. A pretty elegant bouquet, à la Volnay. Not huge in volume, a bit of strawberry, just enough fruit to reach the back, but one of the more delicate wines of the vintage, albeit persistent. Drink from 2025-2031.
2021 Volnay Origines Nicolas Rossignol
£275.00 In Bond £346.07 Inc VAT-
Goedhuis, December 2022
This blend of four different plots - Les Buttes, Les Grand Champs, Les Famines and Les Lurets - from vineyards aged between 10-60 years old, produces a very complete example of the appellation. Brilliant purple colour, very expressive with blueberry and huckleberry flavours. A sweet purity of fruit, with fine powder-like tannins and a stylish finish.
2021 Volnay 1er Cru Ronceret Nicolas Rossignol

Goedhuis, January 2023
Very deep dark currant aromatics, with a touch of cranberry. Very clear and precise, with a striking crunchy fruit character and rewarding freshness. Pinot Noir purity at its best.
2021 Volnay 1er Cru Santenots Nicolas Rossignol
£465.00 In Bond £574.07 Inc VAT-
Goedhuis, December 2022
Nicolas has two different vineyard plots in this fine Premier Cru. The younger 20-year-old parcel borders Volnay and the older 70-year-old parcel lies beside Meursault. He describes it as a Volnay with Côte de Nuits DNA. A delicious succulence of rich pulpy fruit, sloes and wild stewed fruits. Fleshy and rounded tannins, with a refined delicate Pinot twist at the end. Extremely expressive.

Neal Martin, January 2023, Score: 86
The 2021 Volnay Village has a pretty dark plum and blackcurrant scented bouquet. The palate has a slightly herbaceous entry, moderate weight with a Pommard-like, austere finish.
