The steeply terraced slopes of Bievaux have a natural coolness giving this vineyard an excellent freshness, thereby overcoming the warmth of the 2020 summer months. Clear aromas of freshly squeezed lemon and lime, the bright zest of fruit sits comfortably alongside the silky, mid-palate texture and rewarding ripe scented fruit finish.

In bottle. Remarkably fresh, helped by some noble reduction. Very much gunflint style. Chiselled, quite light bodied but really delicious vivacious hillside white with quite good length.

This impressive 1er Cru faces the hillside of Corton Charlemagne. The cool east-facing white marl slope makes it an ideal site for growing Chardonnay, particularly in a warmer vintage such as 2020. Vincent likes to age this wine in larger 350 litre barrels to protect its pure fruit character. With aromas of pear and white fruits, this is very perfumed and floral in nature. It has a great zest of freshness and long controlled finish.

  • JAM

    Jasper Morris MW, January 2022,
    Score: 90-92

A lovely clean lemon and lime colour, quite racy with a bit of bacon fat, punchy behind, some flesh, ripe citrus alongside the white fruit, wears its concentration lightly and is pleasingly long. Excellent finish.

These vines are in a higher altitude location in the Hautes Côtes above Nuits St Georges. It is a naturally cooler site and has excelled in 2020. Very bright, energetic red cherry fruit flavours, an exciting purity, good tannic grip with a lovely bite and lift on the finish.

  • JAM

    Jasper Morris MW, January 2022,

Excellent medium deep purple with a pinkish tinge. The aromatics are beautiful here, with a depth of flavour unusual in Hautes Côtes. Dark raspberry with fresher notes, loganberry perhaps, good grip behind and fair length. Well done.

2020 is Elodie’s first vintage producing this wine as a single lieu-dit. In her view, it is always such a profound wine that it warrants being sold as an individual cuvée. With 60% whole bunch fermented fruit and 40% new oak, this is a very structured style, with masses of dark hedgerow fruits. It has a wild gamey Pinot personality and tremendous length on the finish.

  • NM

    Neal Martin, December 2021,
    Score: 89

The 2020 Maranges Le Goty, from 0.28 hectares, suffered a lot of millerandé bunches this year, resulting in a production of 1,600 bottles. This cuvée contains 50% whole bunch. It presents a more tensile bouquet than the La Rue de Pierres, the fruit a little darker and riper by comparison, and more plummy. The palate is medium-bodied with fine-grained tannins, the 45% new oak lending depth, and quite peppery and spicy toward the finish. This is a fine Maranges to drink over several years. A deeper, darker fruited style of Auxey Duresses this vintage. A wine with wild forest fruit flavours, and a striking amount of sweet gamey fruits. The tannins are pronounced and structured, giving great body and depth to this very interesting cuvée.

  • NM

    Neal Martin, December 2021,
    Score: 87-89

The 2020 Auxey-Duresses Village has just a tiny amount of whole bunch fruit. It has quite a precocious bouquet with ample blueberry and black cherry fruit. The palate is medium-bodied with a sweet entry, high-toned inky cassis fruit with a sweet, citric finish. Give this two or three years in bottle. Drink 2024 - 2032

  • JAM

    Jasper Morris MW, January 2022,
    Score: 86-88

Dark purple centre with a gorgeous plump deep raspberry fruit. Seductive and juicy, just shows a bit of extra richness at the back. Just finished malolactic, neither racked nor sulphured, so understandably ungainly. Enough acidity to compensate for the 14.5% alcohol.

A fine location in the village and one of the contenders for Ier Cru promotion. Les Longeroies lies in the north of the village, and the water-retaining clay soils were clearly an important factor in this vineyard’s success during the drier months of 2020. Shining bright purple colour, with impressive fruit compote flavours. This is a very relaxed style, with a juicy central core of sweet dark fruits, the tannins are fine and contribute to the harmonious finish.

  • BURG

    Burghound, January 2022,
    Score: 90-93

Slightly riper yet still appealingly fresh aromas reflect notes of liqueur-like dark currant, warm earth and a touch of anise. The delicious middle weight flavors possess a caressing and velvety texture, all wrapped in a bitter pit fruit-inflected finale that is just as persistent but not quite as complex, at least not yet. Drink 2028+. Outstanding.

From 70-year-old vines, so unsurprisingly this has really intense dark black fruits. A concentrated, powerful style. The tannins are ripe, with good grip, and the rich fruit sits nicely within the overall structure of the wine.

  • NM

    Neal Martin, December 2021,
    Score: 90-92

The 2020 Chambolle-Musigny Vieilles Vignes comes from four parcels of vine over 70 years old that is matured in around 30% new oak. Elegant and refined on the nose it develops a lovely violet scents with aeration. The palate is well balanced with a gentle grip, fine tannins and acidity with a pure, quite mineral-driven finish. This is worth checking out. Drink 2024 - 2034

Nicolas has two different vineyard plots in this fine 1er Cru. The younger 20-year-old parcel borders Volnay and the older 70-year-old parcel lies beside Meursault. He describes it as a Volnay with Côte de Nuits DNA. In 2020, it is one of the higher alcohol cuvées in his cellars, but the structured breadth and full fruit support it. The bright lift of acidity on the finish keeps the palate perfectly refreshed.

  • NM

    Neal Martin, December 2021,
    Score: 87-89

The 2020 Volnay Les Santenots 1er Cru is completely de-stemmed. Quite rich and confit-like on the nose, this offers mulberry/dark plum aromas that just feel a little muffled. The palate is shows a little more restraint and focus, fine grip and good acidity, with a slight savoriness towards the finish. Drink 2025 - 2042
