Tasting Notes

Goedhuis, November 2020
This is a fine vineyard, with its 60 year old vines sitting just below the Premier Cru Champeaux on the northern edge of the village. Full of juicy rich fruit, this is wonderfully flavoursome with dark berries and hints of coffee and smoky spice. A little more energetic than the Dix Climats, with a touch of mineral edge and drive. Great length and plenty of life.

Neal Martin, December 2020,
Score: 88-90The 2019 Gevrey-Chambertin En Champs is very closed on the nose, touches of rose petal infusing the red berry fruit. The palate is medium-bodied with crunchy red berry fruit, cumin and cracked black pepper notes. There is plenty of energy and I admire the cohesion and concentration on the finish. Give this 24 months to open once in bottle. Drink 2023 - 2035

Jasper Morris MW, November 2020,
Score: 90-9230% Whole Bunch Fermentation; 40% new wood. Deep purple, a soft but charming nose with surprising depth of fruit behind, a few blackberries with dark raspberry and then a fresher finish with more red fruit notes.

Domaine Drouhin Laroze

This substantial Gevrey Chambertin domaine is under the guardianship of a collaborative family team: Philippe Drouhin is ably assisted by son and daughter Nicolas and Caroline. First established in 1850, the domaine has major holdings in Gevrey Chambertin, as well as an impressive array of the Côte de Nuits’s grands crus, stretching from Gevrey down through Chambolle Musginy and into Vougeot. Recent investment at the domaine’s barrel hall will continue to drive quality at Drouhin Laroze. Their style falls somewhere between a modernist and a traditionalist. The wines are ripe, concentrated, and often earthy and textured. They offer terrific value, particularly in Clos de Vougeot Grand Cru.
Region
Gevrey-Chambertin
The greatest village in terms of notable grand cru vineyards, Gevrey Chambertin has no less than 9 of them including its most famous Chambertin and Chambertin Clos de Bèze, and includes a premier cru vineyard that many people deem grand cru in quality - Clos St. Jacques. It encompasses approximately 400 hectares under vine also making it the largest top quality vineyard area in the Côte de Nuits. Gevrey-Chambertin has many followers who seek out its deeply coloured, robust and textured wines. They are often firmer than the neighbouring appellations of Chambolle Musigny and Vosne Romanée and can take several years to soften once released. Due to its size and reputation, the list of excellent producers is noteworthy and many are worth seeking out.
