4 hectares of village Gevrey Chambertin in ten different locations is a sizeable parcel and, as a result, this cuvée is always a classic example of the appellation. Full of characterful summer pudding aromas, this is richly generous, with a striking volume of fruit. Typically structured with its firm tannins and uplifting freshness on the finish. So much more than just a simple village wine.

The 2019 Gevrey-Chambertin "Dix Climats" is a blend of 10 different terroirs that I will not list here. it has a well-defined bouquet of blackberry, wild strawberry and briary scents. The palate is medium-bodied with fine-grained tannins, more red than black fruit and touches of desiccated orange peel and a light brush of cocoa from the 40% new oak on the finish. I might have reduced that level in this year. Drink 2023 - 2030

A background trace of reduction isn't enough to completely overshadow the aromas of black pinot fruit, plum liqueur and humus. The sleeker and most vibrant flavors are also relatively forward though there is enough structure to suggest that 4 to 6 years should see this at its peak. Drink: 2024+

30% Whole Bunch Fermentation; 40% new wood. I thought there might be a whiff of oxidation here, but in fact I suspect it is a residue of tasting the sans souffre cuvée since this is clearly fresh on the palate, even with a slightly stern finish from the stems, cherries with a savoury edge, and good length. 3 Star

This substantial Gevrey Chambertin domaine is under the guardianship of a collaborative family team: Philippe Drouhin is ably assisted by son and daughter Nicolas and Caroline. First established in 1850, the domaine has major holdings in Gevrey Chambertin, as well as an impressive array of the Côte de Nuits’s grands crus, stretching from Gevrey down through Chambolle Musginy and into Vougeot. Recent investment at the domaine’s barrel hall will continue to drive quality at Drouhin Laroze. Their style falls somewhere between a modernist and a traditionalist. The wines are ripe, concentrated, and often earthy and textured. They offer terrific value, particularly in Clos de Vougeot Grand Cru.
The greatest village in terms of notable grand cru vineyards, Gevrey Chambertin has no less than 9 of them including its most famous Chambertin and Chambertin Clos de Bèze, and includes a premier cru vineyard that many people deem grand cru in quality - Clos St. Jacques. It encompasses approximately 400 hectares under vine also making it the largest top quality vineyard area in the Côte de Nuits. Gevrey-Chambertin has many followers who seek out its deeply coloured, robust and textured wines. They are often firmer than the neighbouring appellations of Chambolle Musigny and Vosne Romanée and can take several years to soften once released. Due to its size and reputation, the list of excellent producers is noteworthy and many are worth seeking out.
