En Primeur | Puligny Montrachet

Puligny Montrachet is known as the most delicate of the white wine appellations south of Beaune. Its wines tend to be linear and mineral offering delicate floral and orchard fruit aromatics. Its village and premier cru vineyard area total slightly over 200 hectares but almost half of them are Premier Cru making them one of the highest proportions of quality vineyards in the Côte de Beaune.

Please note: due to high demand, online purchases of 2019 Burgundies are limited to 1 case of each wine. For more information please contact your account manager or wine@goedhuis.com

This Premier Cru, with clay and marl soils, lies on the border with Meursault and therefore makes a bigger style of Puligny. Shining lemon yellow colour, this is a lovely open wine, with flavours of peach and fresh apricot. It has a rich, silky creaminess to it, yet keeps its citrus brightness. High class in every way

As always this is not a Meursault-shaped Puligny, but a genuine PM-shaped creation, with Fichet’s magical touch on board. Lovely and thrillingly appointed, this is my favourite Fichet Puligny ever and it accurately embraces both this elite vineyard, the sensational vintage and also the precision-build which Fichet is rightly so renowned. This is an amazing wine.

    Goedhuis, December 2020

This higher altitude Premier Cru in the hamlet of Blagny excelled in 2019. Enticing honeysuckle and quince aromas. This focuses on energetic purity with a grapefruit-like freshness on the mid-palate and a fine velvety finish. Balanced and appealing.

  • MJ

    Matthew Jukes, December 2020,
    Score: 18+

Sharply acidic and almost painfully jagged and mineral on the finish, you could be forgiven for thinking that this was a Grand Cru Chablis such is the drama on the finish. Of course, this is just a heightened expression on La Garenne and so caveat emptor because if this is not your shape of white then move on. If, however, this piercing freshness and stony purity work for you, then ship it in.

    Jasper Morris MW, December 2020,
    Score: 92

Fresh pale colour, a lively nose with a touch of grapefruit. A slightly sunnier fruit starts to emerge with time in the glass. Offering a warm rich mouthful of fruit behind, this Garenne has maintained balance, with good acidity. 4 stars

This is a lovely floral style of Puligny with hints of orange peel and fresh chamomile. Harmonious and graceful, there is a flowing freshness. Easy and absolutely charming.

  • MJ

    Matthew Jukes, December 2020,
    Score: 18

Relaxed, classy and layered, this is a beautiful and sensual Chardonnay with a forward feel, but it lacks nothing in terms of class and poise. Great freshness lurks beneath a silky-smooth chassis and the length, for a village wine, is sublime.

  • JAM

    Jasper Morris MW, December 2020,
    Score: 91

Pale in colour, lighter than the Meursault and more floral in style. The Puligny-Montrachet has a steely intensity through the middle, but this is also laden with a huge volume of fruit, really attractive and with excellent persistence. This wine has managed to keep a very fresh feel. 4 stars

    Goedhuis, December 2020

Sauzet’s village Puligny is made from 12 parcels in the village, the majority from Les Meix just beside the superb Premier Cru Pucelles vineyard. This is a definitive Puligny, the vibrant fresh citrus fruits give way to a harmonious texture with hints of honeysuckle and panna cotta. Very balanced and deliciously pure.

  • NM

    Neal Martin, December 2020,
    Score: 90-92

A blend of 12 parcels with a large plot in Les Meix, the Puligny-Montrachet Village has a slightly backward but well defined granitic nose. The palate is well balanced with Clementine and touches of ginger, quite vibrant and certainly concentrated for a Village Puligny. Good persistency here - this comes recommended. 2023-2033

    Wine Advocate,
    Score: 90+

The 2019 Puligny-Montrachet Village has turned out nicely, exhibiting aromas of crisp white peach, orange oil, spring blossom and freshly baked bread, followed by a medium to full-bodied, bright and layered palate. Lively and precise, with chalky structuring extract, it should offer a broad drinking window. Drink 2021-2035. William Kelly

    Score: 90-92

Pale lemon and lime, actually quite a classic Puligny nose, floral, but clearly summer flowers not spring. Like the Chassagne this opens out to a much richer fruit than the nose initially suggests, ripe white pears, yet with good natural acidity behind. Very successful, in the style of the vintage. 4 stars

    Goedhuis, December 2020

Renowned for having drive and intensity, this 2019 is classic Referts. The vibrant lemon and lime attack gives way to some rich caramelised peach and buttery notes. This warming ripeness gives way to a tight, grippy mineral finish. A wine of immense class and complexity.

  • JAM

    Jasper Morris MW, December 2020,
    Score: 93

Pale with a little greener edge. The nose is quite reserved, though a delicious volume of fruit emerges on the palate, ripe, yellow plums, a little saline touch to finish, and very persistent. 4 stars

Bordering Meursault Perrières, Boillot’s Champ Canet is a beauty in 2019. Pure yet plump, with refined quince and medlar fruits. The vineyard’s clay soil gives depth, structure and punch. Very long, and the irresistible toffee and caramelised fruit flavours make this an absolute joy.

  • MJ

    Matthew Jukes, December 2020,
    Score: 18.5+

Power-packed and forceful, this is a muscular, well-built, no-nonsense wine with great depth and a square-jawed appeal. In need of a couple of years to unravel, this is a terrific wine with such a strong character it really impresses.

  • JAM

    Jasper Morris MW, December 2020,
    Score: 91

Attractive pale colour with a light green tint. There is a wealth of fruit here, a little sweetness too, a touch of peach, but not excessive, the Champ-Canet has just about kept its integrity. Fine long finish with perhaps a touch of heat? Always very millerand grapes here, I am told, which may be why this wine is flirting with the over exotic. 3 stars
