En Primeur | Patrick Javillier

This great domaine in Meursault continues under Patrick’s name but it is very much the next generation, his daughter Marion and son-in-law Pierre-Emmanuel Lamy, who are taking the domaine forward. He remains an ever-present figure, popping up around the estate, helping and gently guiding wherever he can. Pierre-Emmanuel is responsible for making the wines and considers himself fortunate to draw on Patrick’s 45 years of experience.

The 2020 vintage really enhances the Meursault like characteristics of this vineyard’s wine coming from the Volnay side of the appellation and enjoying a rich base of clay in the soil. Striking yellow fruit characters with hints of quince and medlar jam. The excellent creamy volume is held together perfectly by a gentle touch of youthful acidity. Approachable and instantly pleasurable.

  • Burghound, June 2022, Score: 86-88

Ripe and very fresh aromas include those of apple, pear and cool citrus. There is both good density and vivacity to the attractively textured flavors that display a mild touch of sweetness yet the lingering finish is nicely dry. Drink: 2024+

  • Jasper Morris MW, January 2022, Score: 88-89

Currently in tank, on its finings. Pale colour. A light fresh bouquet with attractive fruit. Some plums, some fresh apple, a steady build up in flesh towards the back of the palate, a good balancing acidity, and fine persistence. Really very good indeed.

A beautiful contrast to the “Forgets” cuvée. This wine is more subtle with its zestful zing of lemon sherbet and freshly squeezed limes. Its honeyed purity gives it a silkiness, a sense of grace and hints of Puligny purity reflecting its position adjoining the famous village itself.

  • Burghound, June 2022, Score: 88

A discreet application of wood is present on the similar nose but with a bit more citrus influence. There is excellent energy and detail to the slightly more concentrated middle weight flavors that exude a refreshing salinity on the complex, lingering and balanced finale. This consistently boxes above its weight, and it is particularly good in 2020. Outstanding. Top value. Drink: 2024+

  • Matthew Jukes, January 2022, Score: 17

Quite riper and creamy with a faint mandarin note (which I am starting to think is a hallmark of the vintage) that is haunting and rather delicious. The palate is seamless, and the oak is very much under control, making it a very successful and flattering style of wine. While it is designed as an early drinker, there is no doubt that it will hold for a good few years, too.

  • Jasper Morris MW, January 2022, Score: 89

Bottled late November. Pretty lemon with a lime tint, this is a little stricter at first on the nose, after bottling, but with a wonderful wealth of apple and fresh pear fruit behind, and very good length. Extremely successful. Fine long aftertaste.

The south easterly facing slopes contribute to the making of a wonderfully showy style of Meursault. The initial white floral fruits, give way to characters of freshly whipped cream and hazelnut. The appealing richness, with flavours of crème caramel and panna cotta, is balanced perfectly by a freshness of fruit which provides a beautifully cleansing feeling at the end of the palate.

  • Burghound, June 2022, Score: 88-91

Ripe and appealingly layered aromas of hazelnut, poached pear and lemon confit introduce solidly voluminous and concentrated medium-bodied flavors that are generously proportioned while delivering fine length on the clean and moderately dry finale. Good quality here. Drink: 2025+

  • Matthew Jukes, January 2022, Score: 17.5

With nice balance and a forward feel, this is a slightly more refined version than the Bourgogne Blanc VV, and it is very much built along the same lines. Not too ebullient and retaining a degree of restraint, this is a lovely, elegant and forward-drinking wine.

  • Jasper Morris MW, January 2022, Score: 90-92

Currently in tank, on its finings. Pure lemon and lime colour. Lean white fruit up front, with good tension behind. Entirely white, no yellow plums, racy limestone feel with good length. Tense and long.

The 5 parcels that make up this cuvée within the lieu dit of Les Tillets are situated on the higher slopes of Meursault facing south-east influencing a more mineral style of Meursault. The initial sensations of freshly baked baguette show a wine of wonderful intensity, beautifully concentrated with the palate rewarded at the end with a finely chiselled freshness, giving a cleansing sensation and great length.

  • Burghound, June 2022, Score: 90

A cool, pure and restrained nose reflects airy and elegant notes of acacia, green apple, anise and a whiff of citrus rind. There is a beguiling sense of underlying tension to the detailed and mineral-inflected flavors that culminate in an attractively dry, clean and lingering finale. This is fine Meursault villages with the innate finesse of Tillets on display. Outstanding. Top value. Drink: 2026+

  • Matthew Jukes, January 2022, Score: 17.5

There is more refinement still in Les Tillets, and it looks rather quiet and slender in the context of the vintage. The fruit is cool and classy, and there is a keen edge of acidity throughout. I like this stylish version of this cuvée, and I am sure it will hold nicely even though it seems to be so welcoming already.

  • Jasper Morris MW, January 2022, Score: 92

Bottled end November. Mid yellow in colour, but fresh. There is an impressive weight of fruit for this hillside vineyard. Significant volume of fresh fruit, tinged with its usual lime blossom character, and good crisp finish with just the right acidity. Plenty of flesh nonetheless. Nice finale on fresh apple fruit.

Les Clousots is not a lieu dit in its own rights but a combination of 2 differently located vineyards. Les Clousots is higher up in the slopes and Les Crotots placed beneath the highly regarded 1er Cru Porusots. This combination contributes to a truly classical example of the appellation of Meursault. Exotic aromas of yellow fruits, layered warm notes of fresh jersey cream, a touch of warm brioche and pecan nut. Deliciously rich, deep, full and long. Quite lovely.

  • Burghound, June 2022, Score: 91

There is a vague whiff of the exotic to the ripe, fresh and pretty aromas of roasted nut, mineral reduction, white peach and tangerine peel. There is superb intensity and cut to the dense and tautly muscular medium weight flavors that exude a subtle minerality on the youthfully austere and impressively persistent and distinctly lemony finish. This is terrific for its level and recommended. Outstanding. Top value. Drink: 2026+

  • Matthew Jukes, January 2022, Score: 18+

More closed than Les Tillets and slightly more power is evident on the mid-palate, but this is still a relatively calm and controlled wine, and it is lovely to see this level of refinement in 2020. More backward than its predecessors, this is an elegant wine with a nice note of lime blossom at its core.

  • Jasper Morris MW, January 2022, Score: 89-91

Bottled late November. Mid lemon colour, apples and quinces on the nose, A good intensity of white fruit on the palate with a little citrus to finish. Clean, clear-cut chiselled and long. Just needs the bouquet to emerge.
