  • Goedhuis, December 2020

Beaux Monts sits above Echezeaux and this cooler location contributes to the bright energy of this 2019. This has great purity with lots of bilberry and freshly made raspberry jam aromas. It reflects the low yield intensity, has masses of drive and a long, controlled finish.

  • Neal Martin, December 2020, Score: 90-92

The 2019 Vosne-Romanée Beaux Monts 1er Cru has a brash, decadent bouquet of intense cassis and black cherry aromas that slightly occlude the terroir expression. The palate is medium-bodied with supple tannins and shows a little more restraint than the nose, although I do still find the finish a little high-octane for a Beaux Monts. Drink 2023 - 2033

  • Burghound, April 2021, Score: 90-93

There is a vaguely roast quality to the softly spicy and floral-suffused aromas of baked plum and cherry, all trimmed in discreet but not invisible oak. The sleek, delicious and nicely vibrant middle weight flavors exude evident minerality on the slightly more persistent finish. This too will need to develop better depth, but the underlying material appears to be up to the task. Drink: 2031+

  • Jancis Robinson, December 2020, Score: 17.5

Tank sample. Deep cherry red. At first the fruit smells much riper here than any of the Maison Roche de Bellene wines tasted so far. Peppery damsons, but it changes in the glass. Dark and quite oaky, it seems, almost charry. Dry, fine tannins pull this back into the elegant camp. I changed my mind about this wine as I tasted it. It needs a lot of time but the structure is very fine indeed. (JH) Drink 2028-2040

A Bourguignon through and through, Nicolas’ unrivalled local network of thoroughly reliable grower-suppliers allows him to source fruit from the most sought-after parcels in the Côte. He also produces a selection of domaine wines (under Domaine de Bellene). The emphasis remains to this day on well-sited venerable vines and viticulture and the Maison Roche de Bellene label is the superlative source of attractive, well-priced Burgundy wines. Nicolas chose the name ‘Bellene' in honour of the ancient Roman name for Beaune.Read less

Region

Vosne Romanée

The vineyards of the modest village of Vosne Romanée are arguably the most sought after in the Côte d'Or. It is host to excellent Village and Premier Cru wines, but it is its most famous Grand Crusthat truly stand out: Romanée-Conti, La Tâche, Richebourg, Grands Echézeaux, Echézeaux, Romanée St. Vivant and La Romanée as well as Cros Parentoux, a Premier Cru vineyard which attracts Grand Cru attention (and prices). Vosne-Romanée can be remarkably robust and powerful, yet be charming and fleshy giving it one of the most diverse styles of the region.
