En Primeur | Laurent Ponsot 2019

“The 2019 vintage will undoubtedly be a most pleasant antidote to erase the pangs of Covid 19. It is indeed an exceptional vintage that we are going to offer you, one of those vintages that history will also remember, but with much more positive emotion!” Laurent Ponsot

We are delighted to offer Laurent Ponsot’s 2019 white and red Burgundies. As you will know, 2019 was a very small but very high-quality crop. This is a year not to be missed.

Laurent continues to make many of the famous Grands and Premiers Crus he made in previous years with the Domaine label, such as Chambertin, Griotte Chambertin, Clos St Denis and Chambolle Musigny 1er Cru Les Charmes, which he has been making since 1982. He is also now producing some additional wines bottled under the new Laurent Ponsot label. This year he has added Gevrey Chambertin 1er Cru En Ergot and Chambolle Musigny 1er Cru Les Sentiers and two other Grands Crus.

Laurent’s philosophy remains unchanged, and he continues to make wines of exceptional purity and balance, without the use of any new oak. His current range includes wines to fit a scale of budgets and styles, with his stunning and energetic Bourgogne Blanc and Bourgogne Rouge cuvées offering excellent value at £120/6 IB (£20 per bottle IB) and plenty of other ‘villages’ cuvees.

Sadly, we have been unable to taste his 2019s as we were unable to get to Burgundy this year, so do make sure you read the glowing reviews from leading Burgundy critics Allen Meadows (Burghound) and Jasper Morris MW.

Pale colour with a light green streak, this is in the lean fresh style. Then light and sweeter fruit on the palate, plums and fresh apricot, softer finish

Six suppliers enable them to make this a cuvée ronde. Pale lemon and lime, with soft floral notes, aiming for the rounded and eventually buttery style of Meursault. Plenty of oak at the moment helps to drive this style but ultimately it is medium-bodied rather than a weighty monster.

Pale lemon and lime, a slightly confected nose, hyacinths appear unexpectedly, lifted, yellow fruit behind, a bit of heat. I don’t understand this today. Some tannins behind.

Six suppliers here too. Softer and richer fruit compared to Meursault Blagny, no surprise there, fills out the palate very nicely, a little vanilla touch, a certain warmth from the sunshine of 2019, fair length.

A riper and very fresh nose speaks mostly of red berries and earth where the latter element is picked up by the sleek, delicious and vibrant middle weight flavors that flash good detail on the nicely complex, persistent and only mildly rustic finish. This is worth a look. Drink 2025+

Attractive mid crimson. Very appealing fresh pinot notes, with some structure behind. The barrel has been well used here. Not an immediate wine but this should develop very well over three to five years

A more deeply pitched nose consists mostly of red and dark currant, soft earth, sauvage and spice wisps. There is fine volume to the equally sleek and delicious medium weight flavors that conclude in a chiseled, rustic and ever-so-mildly drying finish. This youthfully austere effort will likely harmonize in time and my projected range offers the benefit of the doubt. Drink 2027+

Pretty pink purple, lightly floral on the nose with some discreet red fruit, really pretty on the palate then the characteristic firmer finish which I applaud, and very good length. Harmonious too.

A much more floral-suffused and more elegant nose displays notes of the essence of black pinot and red berry fruit, especially cherry, laced with subtle notes of anise and baking spices. The very fresh and beautifully detailed medium-bodied flavors exude a refreshing salinity before terminating a dusty bitter cherry pit-inflected finish. Drink 2027+

From 8 different plots. Paler crimson here, a little more warmth. Very ripe cherries. Also a firmer, hard finish with some kirsch notes, but still within bounds. The fruit is not sloppy nor cooked but the warmth of the summer is nonetheless apparent.

A slightly more deeply pitched and markedly spicier nose features notes of red currant, dark cherry and a plethora of exotic tea nuances that include jasmine and pekoe among others. Once again, the mouthfeel is attractively sleek and refined with good verve suffusing the detailed and lightly minerally flavors that also conclude in a lingering and dusty bitter fruit pit-infected finish. This firm effort is very Vosne in style. Drink 2029+

Medium to pale crimson. The bouquet is attractively perfumed, the red fruit starts gently at the front of the palate then gains weight, and I like the drier structure at the back because the fruit can keep pace with it. Not at the moment in the same harmony as the Gevrey but this will certainly come.

There are again plenty of floral elements present on the earthy black raspberry-suffused nose. Here the ripe and fresh nose derives more from the red side of the fruit spectrum while adding nuances of cherry liqueur, warm earth and underbrush. There is very good detail and subtle minerality to the dense and relatively muscular big-bodied flavors that deliver fine length on the balanced finale. This very firm effort will need to add depth over time to achieve the upper end of my projected range. Drink 2034+
