En Primeur | Domaine Tortochot

The Tortochot family have been respected vignerons in Gevrey Chambertin since the 19th century, but it is in recent times, under the stewardship of Chantal Tortochot, that key changes have taken place. After 15 years of working in the oil industry, Chantal moved back to the estate to convert it from being a supplier of fine quality fruit to the négociant house Joseph Drouhin, into her own family domaine. In 2008 she made the next step by converting her 12 hectares to fully organic practices, the benefits of which were apparent in such healthy fruit in 2020.

Since 2016 Chantal has incorporated as much as 25% whole bunch fermented fruit, allowing the mineral salts imparted by the stems to give a vibrant freshness to her wines. Whilst she continued with this philosophy in 2020, she did reduce the proportion as she felt the berries already had sufficient phenolic content. She is delighted by the freshness of her 2020s despite the warmth of the year. She says the gentle rainfall on 21st and 28th August, before she started harvesting on the 29th, was hugely beneficial, as it loosened the skins and refreshed the grapes. Her reflective style of winemaking allows her wines to be enjoyed in youth, whilst retaining excellent balance for good bottle maturation.
