En Primeur | Domaine Tollot-Beaut

Tollot-Beaut own 24 hectares of vineyards in the communes of Chorey lès Beaune, Savigny lès Beaune, Aloxe Corton and Beaune. They were one of the first estates in the Côte d’Or to bottle their own wines in the 1930s and market them under their domaine label. Today the estate is run by Nathalie Tollot and her two cousins, Olivier and wine maker Jean-Paul Tollot. Jean-Paul aims to please: he wants his wines to be approachable, without losing any appellational identity. This youthful charm can be misleading, history shows the estate’s wines also have an outstanding propensity to age.

A very striking Bourgogne rouge, with deeply intense dark berry fruits and a savoury, earthy tone. This has a soft, round mouth-feel, complemented by the bold richness of a warmer vintage which suits the Bourgogne rouge style perfectly. A lovely example of Côte de Beaune Pinot fruit.

  • Jasper Morris MW, January 2022, Score: 83-85

Black with a purple rim. Very heady, rather over the top cooked raspberry. Thick chocolate texture, some acidity but I can’t see where this will go. Top of the tree at 15% alcohol

Bursting with creamy ripe guava and exotic fruit, with a delicate top note of hazelnut and orange peel. Lively freshness on the finish.

  • Jasper Morris MW, Janaury 2022, Score: 86-88

Recently racked. Fine mid lemon, a pleasant light bouquet, then much more intensity on the palate, some yellow plum but staying fresh, with a good long aftertaste

  • Goedhuis, December 2021

A family monopole on the northern boundary of Chorey, known for its generosity and fruit appeal. Dark olive in colour, with abundant sweet blackberries. This is lush and full, with rounded tannins and a layer of smoke and spice. Lovely and very giving.

  • Neal Martin, December 2021, Score: 91-93

The 2020 Chorey-lès-Beaune Pièce du Chapitre comes from just under a hectare and a half of 70-year old vine that has been produced since 2001. It has a bright black cherry, plummy, peony-tinged bouquet that leaps from the glass. The new oak, 25%, is neatly integrated. The palate is medium-bodied with supple tannins. There is a fine bead of acidity here, superb tension with a harmonious, caressing finish with just the right amount of sapidiy. Excellent and doubtless great value. Drink 2024 - 2040

  • Matthew Jukes, January 2022, Score: 17.5

This is a sensational wine, and it is surely one of the finest Chorey vintages I can remember, and I have been following these guys for 30 years. The fruit texture, purity, succulence, and length are magnificent, and the value is incredible. For a truly regal Chorey, nothing comes close to this Tollot creation.

  • Jasper Morris MW, January 2022, Score: 84-87

Inky black with a purple rim. The nose is very backward. Like the regular Chorey, there is a huge intensity of black fruit, again with considerable grip behind, a little appley and still smells of the fermentation marc.

  • Burghound, April 2022, Score: 91

Despite being quite ripe, there is a certain coolness to the layered purple fruit, black raspberry and warm earth scents. There is both outstanding volume and power to the to the solidly concentrated middle weight plus flavors that possess an abundance of sappy dry extract that pushes the dusty and firm supporting tannins to the background on the noticeably better-balanced finale. Outstanding. Drink: 2028+

  • Jasper Morris MW, January 2022, Score: 84-87

Dense black purple, this is chunkier than the Lavières. It was picked on the same day but came in at 14.8%. The fruit strays on the blacker side, while the acidity is quite high. Medium length here and may well come round. At the moment the tannins stick out a bit.

  • Goedhuis, December 2021

A wine which justifies this well positioned vineyard’s excellent reputation in Savigny. With an attractive marriage of cherry blossom and wild berry fruits, this is rich and warming, showing off the vineyard’s southerly exposure. It also has a super crisp brightness and freshness. Good length and showy appeal.

  • Neal Martin, December 2021, Score: 88-90

The 2020 Savigny-lès-Beaune Les Lavières 1er Cru is well-defined on the nose with slightly earthy red berry fruit, touches of crushed stone, slightly peppery (though this is de-stemmed like all Tollot-Beaut’s cuvées.) The palate is medium-bodied with sappy red fruit. Good density here, maybe not the most tensile of the cuvées from the Domaine this vintage, but there is decent weight on the back end. Give it a couple of years in bottle. Drink 2025 - 2038

  • Burghound, April 2022, Score: 89

A moderately fresh nose reflects notably ripe but not roasted notes of red and black currant, spice and dried floral nuances. The rich, concentrated and succulent medium-bodied flavors coat the palate while the sap buffers the dense but fine tannins shaping the mildly warm finale. This is perfectly good, if a bit atypical, but it does not appear to be at its usual distinguished level. Drink: 2027+

  • Matthew Jukes, January 2022, Score: 17.5

With wild black fruit and so much class and depth, this is richer and yet more refined wine than the Chorey, and it is an instant classic. Do everything you can to grab a case of this wine. It is such a rewarding wine, and the price is spot on, too.

  • Jasper Morris MW, January 2022, Score: 87-90

Rich deep purple, the bouquet is less oppressive, better balanced than either Chorey. Ripe raspberry pinot, still quite massive at the finish but less exaggerated and the acidity melds in well with the fruit. Noticeably more length to the finish. 14.3% but better balanced

  • Goedhuis, December 2021

The stony soil of this vineyard contributes to a bright and racy style of Pinot Noir. This is vibrant and fresh, with flavours of raspberry and tayberry. It has an almost crunchy character to it, which enhances the Pinot Noir purity. Quite simply a very pretty cuvée.

  • Neal Martin, December 2021, Score: 89-91

The 2020 Aloxe-Corton Les Fournières 1er Cru is ripe and juicy on the nose: strawberry and raspberry, the oak here more pronounced compared to the Les Vercots. The palate is medium-bodied with ripe, saturated tannins and again, here, I find the new oak more pronounced and perhaps just detracting a little from its delineation and mineralité on the finish. Yet once that is flly subsumed, this could turn into quite a substantial Aloxe-Corton. Drink 2025 - 2038

  • Burghound, April 2022, Score: 91

There is much better freshness to the ripe aromas of black cherry liqueur, warm earth and discreet sauvage nuances. There is very good concentration to the solidly voluminous and powerful medium weight plus flavors that conclude in a robust, rustic and firmly structured finale. This offers fine potential though note that it's going to require at least a decade of keeping to arrive at its apogee. Outstanding. Drink 2030+

  • Jasper Morris MW, Janaury 2022, Score: 87-89

Ripe mid-purple, with a little bit more class to the nose than Vercots (fortunately). Red and black fruit together, the tannins are firm again, the acidity a little less evident, with fair length. This should make a sound, if not refined, pinot.

  • Goedhuis, December 2021

From two relatively young parcels of vines, this is a fine 1er Cru facing southwest towards Pernand Vergelesses and Savigny lès Beaune. A bright and clear style, with hints of cedar and flavours of summer pudding. The tannins provide a tension and freshness, which picks up a lovely sweetness on the finish.

  • Neal Martin, December 2021, Score: 90-92

The 2020 Aloxe-Corton Les Vercots 1er Cru is tangibly cut from a different cloth on the nose compared to the Village Cru: much darker fruit, a subtle marine influence at play, an almost pastille-like quality. The palate is medium-bodied with sinewy tannins on the entry that frame the cranberry and strawberry fruit laced with white pepper. There is a little oak to be assimilated on the finish, but I can see this giving 15-20 years of drinking pleasure. Drink 2025 - 2040

  • Matthew Jukes, January 2022, Score: 18+

I have always felt that Les Vercots was a quieter and more mineral-imbued wine, and this has meant that I have often left it out of wine lists and my own purchases, but in 2020 this is a sublime wine with stellar concentration and class. It is the finest Les Vercots I have ever tasted, and it is a sign that Aloxe-Corton is finally coming of age, vineyard by vineyard as this largely forgotten village is finding its feet with magnificent wines like this one.

  • Jasper Morris MW, January 2022, Score: 84-87

Pinot très fin in a terroir which is not. Nor is the vintage for that matter. Exotic purple, with ripe plums on the nose, After the burst of fruit, now including some blacker notes, come tarry tannins. I fear that the 15.4% alcohol will be hard to swallow.

  • Goedhuis, December 2021

Protected from the west wind by the Montagne de Beaune, this cuvée has an appealing warmth to its firm black fruit flavours, a touch of rusticity and leathery spice. A wine with a grippy structure, excellent intensity, and long poised finish.

  • Neal Martin, December 2021, Score: 92-94

The 2020 Beaune Les Grèves 1er Cru has a much more cohesive and delineated bouquet than the Clos du Roi: vibrant and fresh with vivid red cherry and cranberry fruit. The palate is medium-bodied with superb mineralité, wonderful tension and sense of energy. This year, there is a big difference between this and the Clos du Roi, a really quite wonderful Beaune. This is highly recommended. Drink 2024 - 2044

  • Burghound, April 2022, Score: 90

An equally ripe yet slightly fresher nose blends notes of spice and earth with those of red currant, plum and a very subtle suggestion of wood. There is better verve to the equally seductively textured medium-bodied flavors that possess very good mid-palate density, all wrapped in sappy, lingering and better-balanced finale because while there is a touch of warmth, it is markedly more subtle. Drink 2027+

  • Jasper Morris MW, January 2022, Score: 91-93

Rich purple, with a heady but plausible nose, this is holding together very well as befits a classical terroir. Huge density of flavour here, excellent dark fruit and grip, slightly dry tannins but with this wealth of fruit it will work. A good long term prospect with this amount of backbone

  • Goedhuis, December 2021

From the lower slopes of the hillside of Beaune, this is typically more forward and open than the Grèves. It is deliciously perfumed with a red cherry and raspberry bouquet. Harmonious with lace-like tannins, this so giving it is tempting to drink immediately. This would however be a mistake, as it has the poise and balance to develop for many years.

  • Neal Martin, December 2021, Score: 87-89

The 2020 Beaune Clos de Roi 1er Cru is overtly floral on the nose with attractive scents of wilted rose petal and peony percolating through the red berry fruit. The palate is medium-bodied, quite spicy, maybe just a touch of greenness on the back palate here. Fresh, but I find more cohesion and harmony on the Savigny-lès-Beaune at the moment. Drink 2024 - 2034

  • Burghound, April 2022, Score: 88

Once again, the nose is very ripe while stopping just short of being over the top with its combination of poached plum, spice, leather and warm earth. The succulent, round and seductively textured flavors possess an opulent mid-palate, indeed they're almost thick, before terminating in a lingering if noticeably warm finale. This is an interesting wine in several respects though I confess that it's not my particular stylistic preference. Drink 2026+

  • Matthew Jukes, January 2022, Score: 18.5

Always a show-stopper, this is another brilliant performance from Tollot-Beaut and I this must be one of the most complete portfolios in the 2020 vintage. The oak and acidity are perfectly judged against the imperial fruit and the prodigious length. A great wine and a supreme Premier Cru in terms of value for money and sheer class.

  • Jasper Morris MW, January 2022, Score: 89-91

First picked, and in time. The colour is purple without the black and the rich cherry-raspberry fruit, This is rather lovely in its intense 2020 style, and though the fruit is quite extrovert the tannin/acid structure will need quite a long time.

  • Goedhuis, December 2021

A very charming Grand Cru, exemplifying the flamboyance Nathalie found in the 2020 vintage. Creamy, generous, and lively with deliciously sweet summer loganberries. This has layered depth, reflecting the wines Grand Cru status. It flows through the palate and the tannins sit comfortably underneath, giving an edge of grip and energy. Excellent.

  • Neal Martin, December 2021, Score: 90-92

The 2020 Corton-Bressandes Grand Cru is the one cuvée that had slight suggestions of some over-ripe fruit , though minor and this could be subsumed with bottle age. The palate is well balanced and here, I could not find any sur-maturité, but a sensual, velvety texture and a touch of spiciness towards the harmonious finish that is blurred by a little warmth of alcohol, a whopping 15.0° in this cuvée. Drink 2028 - 2050

  • Burghound, April 2022, Score: 90

An acceptably fresh nose features a layered mix of ripe red and dark cherry, cassis and discreet floral nuances. There is better freshness and verve to the well-defined and more refined medium-bodied flavors that display outstanding length on the bitter pit fruit-inflected finish. I like the balance though it's hard to predict whether the nose will regain freshness with some bottle aging though my score offers the benefit of the doubt that it will. Drink 2032+

  • Matthew Jukes, January 2022, Score: 18.5+

This is one half step ahead of the Clos du Roi on account of the complexity and amplitude of flavour. There is a little more of each component, and instead of becoming too showy or rich, it just becomes longer and finer. This is a dreamy vintage and one of the best value Grands Crus of the entire campaign.

  • Jasper Morris MW, January 2022, Score: 89-93

Rich purple, perhaps not quite so dense. Ripe strawberry with some floral rose notes in a concentrated register, then an explosion of blackcurrant, blackberry and some fresher red berry notes as well on the palate, soft and liquid, though the alcohol is showing, at 15%.
